Vermont Business Magazine The Shalom Alliance, based in Burlington, issued the following statement: Several days ago, a swastika was carved into a door at Sheldon Elementary School, part of the Franklin Northeast Supervisory Union (FNESU). This is a reprehensible act of hatred and cannot be ignored. Such symbols of violence have no place in our schools or communities, and immediate steps must be taken by FNESU to address this incident and prevent future occurrences.
This is not the first time a Vermont school has been the canvas for antisemitic vandalism. Other schools across the state have experienced similar incidents, and the problem is not confined to one place. But because Sheldon Elementary is the most recent site, we are asking FNESU to act now.
School Districts have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and families who have been directly impacted by this horrifying act, which means communicating clearly about what steps are being taken, offering real support, and making sure this moment is met with more than silence.
The Shalom Alliance stands ready to assist FNESU. We are here to offer direct support to individuals and families grappling with the emotional aftermath of this event. Additionally, we are available to collaborate with SU administrators and educators to develop effective strategies for addressing antisemitism in their schools.
It is imperative that this incident is neither downplayed nor overlooked. Failure to confront such acts head-on allows hatred to fester. By taking decisive action now, we can work together to ensure that our schools remain safe havens for learning, free from fear and intolerance.
Below are resources for Jewish families, students, community members, and allies seeking to support their neighbors. Together, we can stand against antisemitism and all forms of hatred and bigotry in our schools and communities.
