Burlington Fire Chief Michael LaChance to retire effective June 30

LaChance has served with the Burlington Fire Department for nearly 26 years, including two years as Chief.

Vermont Business Magazine The Office of Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak announced that Burlington Fire Chief Michael LaChance intends to retire, effective June 30, 2025.

LaChance has served the City of Burlington for 26 years, including the past two years as Fire Chief Engineer. LaChance began as a volunteer firefighter in Colchester over 30 years ago, before joining the Burlington Fire Department in 1999. Over 26 years he has continued to demonstrate his commitment to the department, its members, and the residents they serve.

“Serving as Chief has been the privilege of a lifetime,” said Fire Chief Michael LaChance. “From my earliest days in the department to my tenure leading it, I have witnessed our firefighters' unwavering commitment, bravery, and professionalism firsthand. Their selfless service in the face of adversity inspires me every day.”

“As Mayor, it is crucial to have a trusted partner in the Fire Chief position, and Chief LaChance has been that person from the earliest days of my tenure,” said Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak. “I am so grateful he served as my first Fire Chief, offering wise counsel, colleagueship and support to me as a new Mayor. His dedicated service to the Queen City and commitment to our Fire Department sets a standard of public service that should be emulated by all leaders.”

“The members of BFFA local 3044 are grateful for Chief LaChance and his 26 dedicated years serving the Queen City,” said BFFA President Josh Kirtlink. “It has been said that Chief LaChance ‘bleeds BFD’ because of his passion for this organization, and he will be missed.”

The City will announce next steps for the BFD leadership transition in early May.
