AOT Road Construction Report, week of October 21

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of October 21, 2024. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.  

Note: When projects are completed, they are no longer listed in this report.    

Interstates:   

I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. between Exit 19 in St. Albans and the Lamoille River Bridge in Milton (MM 102), traffic will be reduced to one lane southbound and one lane northbound, intermittently. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the construction area. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone.    

I-89 Montpelier-Waterbury – This resurfacing project is the northbound travel (right) lane only from approximately Bridge No. 40N (MM 52.5) in Montpelier to Exit 10 off ramp (MM 63) in Waterbury. Motorists can expect intermittent one lane of travel Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH during the lane closure. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone. 

I-89 Richmond – South of Exit 11, northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane of travel from MM 75.45 to MM 76.79 Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday, northbound traffic will use the crossover into the southbound passing lane from MM 75.45 to MM 76.79.  Southbound traffic is reduced to one lane. 

I-89 Royalton – Work continues on the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges near Exit 3 in Royalton. A new traffic pattern is in effect until fall 2025: For southbound traffic, all vehicles will use the low-speed lane. For northbound traffic, all vehicles will cross over onto I-89 South and then back to I-89 North north of the bridges. Traffic using the I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp will use the ramp crossover north of the bridges to the newly constructed I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones on northbound and southbound I-89, and to 25 mph on the Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph with a 14’ height restriction under the bridges on VT 107.    

I-91 Derby – On- and off-ramps at Exits 27, 28, and 29 will have reduced speeds and lane widths while a paving project finishes up. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic through the work zones. Motorists should be aware of wet paint and lane shifts when entering and exiting the interstate. 

I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 South between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect until further notice. Vehicles must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during morning and afternoon commuting hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 North will be in effect Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect delays during rolling roadblocks.   

I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on I-91 over VT 121. Northbound travel is limited to one lane within the construction zone. A speed reduction to 55 mph is in place. VT 121 at the I-91 overpass is reduced to one-lane alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals.   

State Highways:  

Bennington – Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work.        

Berlin-Barre – A single-lane closures is planned near the Berlin and Barre City town line on VT 62. Depending on weather and schedule, this work may occur during one shift of either night or day work. One lane of traffic will be maintained in all directions. Motorists should watch for wet paint.    

Berlin-Barre Town – Single-lane closures are planned for VT 63 in all intersections. Depending on weather and schedule, this work may occur during day or night work. One lane of traffic will be maintained in all directions. Motorists should watch for wet paint. 

Brattleboro-Hinsdale – One-way alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will continue to be in place on VT 142 adjacent to the project entrance. Motorists should watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone and working near the roadway. 

Cambridge-Belvidere – A resurfacing project on VT 109 at its intersection with VT 108 in Cambridge to its intersection with VT 118 in Belvidere will cause one lane of alternating traffic Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in multiple areas. 

Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 15. Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and three traffic control packages facilitating alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 from Hogback Road to the VT 15/VT 108 roundabout. On Saturday from 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., there will be alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 in Cambridge. 

Colchester – Improvements are underway at the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and the U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 intersection. Monday through Friday, I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 southbound. The I-89 northbound off-ramp slip lane and the slip lane from U.S. 2 eastbound to the I-89 southbound on-ramp remains closed. The I-89 northbound off-ramp and I-89 southbound on-ramp will remain open and accessible at their intersections with U.S. 2. Monday through Wednesday, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., there will be alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on U.S. 7 between U.S. 2 and Wiley Road. 

Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway for Bridge 20 on VT 121 over the Saxtons River. Temporary traffic signals are installed to allow alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge 24/7. Overweight vehicles are not permitted to cross the existing bridge and must seek alternate routes until traffic is shifted to the new bridge this fall. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., flaggers will be periodically on-site near the junction of VT 121 and Fisher Hill Road to facilitate alternating one-way traffic. 

Hartford Bridge #7 – Monday through Friday, motorists should expect significant delays at the north and south approaches of the bridge near the intersection of Mill Road and the VA Cutoff Road, and the intersection of VT 14 with the VA Cutoff Road. The two-week closure of the old bridge #7 over The White River and Town Highway 98 in Hartford, remains in effect. Southbound traffic is detoured to VT 14 over the U.S. 4/U.S. 5 bridge, onto U.S. 5, then merge with U.S. 4. Northbound traffic is detoured to the VA Cutoff Road or Mill Road, onto U.S. 4, then merge onto U.S. 5 and proceed over the U.S. 4/U.S. 5 bridge, then onto VT 14.  Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.   

Hartford U.S. 5 – Monday through Friday, during nighttime and daytime hours, motorists should expect traffic shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 throughout the project area. Motorists should expect significant delays during nighttime hours and minimal delays during daytime hours. The project area spans U.S. 5 from the Hartford/Hartland town line to the intersection of the on-ramps for I-91 south and I-89, U.S. 5 from the intersection of North Main Street and Hartford Avenue continuing just north of Devin Street, and U.S. 5 from the intersection of the on-ramps for I-91 south and I-89 to the intersection of North Main Street and Hartford Avenue. The commercial truck detour remains in effect at the intersection of North Main Street and U.S. 5 and directs truck traffic to continue south on U.S. 5 and utilize the Sykes Mountain Avenue roundabout to then travel north on U.S. 5, where truck traffic will then be able to make the left turn onto Hartford Avenue to travel over the bridge and continue onto U.S. 5. Flaggers and uniformed traffic officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Marshfield-Danville – Monday through Friday, motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns and minor delays on U.S. 2 from the intersection with VT 232 in Marshfield and continuing east to the intersection with VT 15 in West Danville. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Montpelier – Daytime work zones will be in place on Memorial Drive from the Exit 8 interchange to the intersection with U.S. 2 and on Dog River Road from the intersection with Memorial Drive to the State Highway limits. One lane of traffic in either direction will be maintained on Memorial Drive. Flaggers will facilitate alternating traffic patterns on Dog River Road. 

Northfield-Berlin – Multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will be in place on VT 12 throughout the project limits starting on Tuesday. Uniformed traffic officers will be following multiple mobile operations. 

Ludlow – Pleasant Street at the junction of Pleasant Street and Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic to facilitate project construction. A detour is in place that routes vehicle traffic from Pleasant Street on Elm Street, Main Street, and Pleasant Street Extension. 

Pittsford – Motorists are traveling over the temporary bridge. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., traffic control will be present to allow for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7. 

Quechee Gorge Bridge – The eastbound travel lane will be closed through spring 2025. Signal permits alternate travel over the bridge. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via signed detour through the visitor center. 

Richmond – On Monday, the new bridge will be open for motorists. Traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a single lane of alternating travel near Bridge #29 construction. 

Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project will require nighttime lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from Sunday night to Saturday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., on U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue and on U.S. 4 between U.S. 7 and Gleason Road. Motorists can expect limited pavement markings on U.S. 7 and U.S. BUS 4.  

Searsburg – The shoulder of VT 9 at Bridge No. 20, located approximately 1.2 miles west of intersection VT 8, is closed and a speed reduction is in place because workers are moving fill material on-site for a temporary roadway. Uniform traffic officers/flaggers are present Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.  

Williston – For the culvert replacement under VT 2A 90’ north of the old State Police barracks, Sunday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction with a lane shift in effect for southbound traffic between Taft's Corner and the Exit 12 Interchange. At 6:30 p.m. lanes will be restricted to alternate one-way traffic until Monday at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained; 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. one lane of alternate one-way traffic will be maintained.  

Worcester – During daytime hours, motorists should expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers over the new bridge. The bridge will be open to two-way traffic during non-working hours. Motorists are reminded to use caution while traveling through the work zone and to share the roadway with bicyclists. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
