Vermont Business Magazine The Brattleboro Retreat, a leading provider of mental health services in Vermont, has released its 2024 Annual Report. The report highlights the Retreat’s ongoing commitment to compassionate care, its resilience in the face of healthcare challenges, and a renewed focus on services for Vermont’s youth and underserved populations.

Leadership Transition and Strategic Vision

Steve Cummings, Interim Chief Executive Officer, Brattleboro Retreat

The report marks the introduction of Steve Cummings as Interim Chief Executive Officer. Cummings expressed his dedication to advancing the Retreat’s mission, saying, “The Brattleboro Retreat plays a vital role in the lives of young people, families, and our broader community. I am excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue to evolve, expanding our specialized care to meet the unique needs of our patients.”

A Renewed Commitment to Adolescent Care

One of the most significant announcements in the report is the revitalization of the Retreat's adolescent residential treatment services. The Retreat has proposed the reopening of its adolescent residential program as a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) for youth aged 12-18, providing intensive, around-the-clock care for adolescents facing mental health challenges.

This facility will bridge the gap between outpatient services and acute inpatient hospitalization, ensuring Vermont’s youth have access to the critical mental health services they need.

Innovative Programs and Partnerships

The Brattleboro Retreat continues to lead the way in mental health treatment with the introduction of new, cutting-edge programs. It launched a Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Program (PHP/IOP) for healthcare professionals and first responders. Its Specialty Medication Clinic now offers esketamine therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression.

Through partnerships like Healthworks ACT with Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, HCRS, and Groundworks Collaborative, Retreat clinicians are embedded in primary care, reducing barriers and expanding mental health access, especially for vulnerable populations.

Support from Donors and Community

The Brattleboro Retreat’s mission is supported by the generosity of the community, including dedicated employees and grateful former patients. With each contribution, we continue to enhance our programs, invest in innovative treatments, and expand access to care for individuals and families in need. This year, employees raised over $15,000 to replace the Children's Services van, ensuring kids can enjoy enriching outings. In addition, 11 employees were inducted into the Rockwell Society, honoring those who have contributed over $10,000 and demonstrating their deep commitment to the Retreat’s mission. Our community’s generosity continues to inspire hope for those we serve.
