AOT Road Construction Report week of October 14

VermontBiz This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.  

Note: When projects are completed, they are no longer listed in this report.  

Interstates:   

I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Between Exit 19 in St. Albans and the Lamoille River Bridge in Milton (MM 102), traffic will be reduced to one lane southbound Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and one lane northbound Tuesday through Thursday 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the construction area. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone. 

I-89 Montpelier-Waterbury – This resurfacing project is the northbound travel (right) lane only from approximately Bridge No. 40N (MM 52.5) in Montpelier to the Exit 10 off ramp (MM 63) in Waterbury. Motorists can expect intermittent one lane of travel Tuesday through Friday 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH during the lane closure. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone.     

I-89 Richmond – Motorists will encounter intermittent lane closures Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 south of Exit 11 in the northbound and southbound lanes. Beginning Thursday, northbound and southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane for the next several weeks. 

I-89 Royalton – Work continues on the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges near Exit 3 in Royalton. A new traffic pattern is in effect until fall 2025: For southbound traffic, all vehicles will use the low-speed lane. For northbound traffic, all vehicles will cross over onto I-89 South and then back to I-89 North north of the bridges. Traffic using the I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp will use the ramp crossover north of the bridges to the newly constructed I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones on northbound and southbound I-89, and to 25 mph on the Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph with a 14’ height restriction under the bridges on VT 107.     

I-91 Derby – On- and off-ramps at Exits 27, 28, and 29 will have reduced speeds and lane widths while a paving project is completed. Motorists should be aware of wet paint and lane shifts when entering and exiting the interstate. 

I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 South between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect until further notice. Vehicles must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during morning and afternoon commuting hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 North will be in effect Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect delays during rolling roadblocks. 

I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on I-91 over VT 121. Travel is reduced to one lane across the northbound bridge with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 at the I-91 overpass is reduced to one-lane alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals.  
 

State Highways:  

Bennington – Tuesday through Friday between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work. 

Berlin – Nighttime single-lane closures are planned for Tuesday night to Friday morning on Berlin State Highway between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. From the on- and off- ramps with VT 62 to the intersection with U.S. 302, one lane of traffic will be maintained in either direction.  

Berlin-Barre – Nighttime single-lane closures are planned for Tuesday night through Friday morning in all intersections with VT 62 between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Motorists should watch for wet paint.  

Berlin-Barre Town – Nighttime single-lane closures are planned on VT 63 at the Exit 6 interchange, Miller Road intersection, and VT 14 intersection for Tuesday night through Friday morning from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Motorists should watch for wet paint. 

Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Construction traffic continues to use the VT 142 and Depot Street project entrances. Alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will be implemented as needed on VT 142 while the intersection with the new VT/NH 119 bridge is constructed. Crews will be accessing the shoulders along approach routes to the project for sign installation and motorists should watch for uniformed traffic officers facilitating this operation. 

Cambridge-Belvidere – A resurfacing project on VT 109 at its intersection with VT 108 in Cambridge to its intersection with VT 118 in Belvidere will cause one lane of alternating traffic Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in multiple areas. 

Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 15. Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays. Traffic control will facilitate alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 from just east of VT 100C to the VT 15/VT 108 roundabout. 

Colchester – Improvements are underway at the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and the U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 intersection. Tuesday through Friday, I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 southbound. The I-89 North off-ramp slip lane and the slip lane from U.S. 2 eastbound to the I-89 South on-ramp remain closed. The I-89 North off-ramp and I-89 South on-ramp will remain open and accessible at their intersections with U.S. 2. There will be lane shifts on U.S. 2 between the I-89 bridge and Jasper Mine Road and alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Crews will be out of the roadway on Monday.   

Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway for Bridge 20 on VT 121 over the Saxtons River. Temporary traffic signals are installed to allow alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge 24/7. Overweight vehicles are not permitted to cross the existing bridge and must seek alternate routes until traffic is shifted to the new bridge this fall. From Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., flaggers will be periodically on-site near the junction of VT 121 and Fisher Hill Road to facilitate alternating one-way traffic. 

Hartford Bridge #7 – Beginning Monday 10/14 at 7:30 a.m., the old bridge #7 over the White River and Town Highway 98 in Hartford will be closed and all traffic will be detoured for a two-week period. Southbound traffic will be detoured to VT 14 over the U.S. 4/U.S. 5 bridge, onto U.S. 5, and then merge with U.S. 4. Northbound traffic will be detoured to the VA Cutoff Rd/Mill Rd, onto U.S. 4, then merge onto U.S. 5 and proceed over the U.S. 4/U.S. 5 bridge, and then onto VT 14. Motorists should also expect significant delays at the north and south approaches of the bridge near the intersection of Mill Road and the VA Cutoff Road, and the intersection of VT 14 with the VA Cutoff Road. There will be intermittent lane closures on VT 14 between Christian Street and Park Street near Bridge #7 over the White River and Town Highway 98. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Hartford U.S. 5 – Monday through Friday, during nighttime and daytime hours, motorists should expect traffic shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 throughout the project area. Motorists should expect significant delays during nighttime hours and minimal delays during daytime hours. The project area spans U.S. 5 from the Hartford/Hartland town line to the intersection of the on-ramps for I-91 South and I-89, U.S. 5 from the intersection of North Main Street and Hartford Avenue continuing just north of Devin Street, and U.S. 5 from the intersection of the on-ramps for I-91 South and I-89 to the intersection of North Main Street and Hartford Avenue. The commercial truck detour remains in effect at the intersection of North Main Street and U.S. 5 and directs truck traffic to continue south on U.S. 5 and utilize the Sykes Mountain Avenue roundabout to then travel north on U.S. 5, where truck traffic will then be able to make the left turn onto Hartford Avenue to travel over the bridge and continue onto U.S. 5. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Ludlow Pleasant Street at the junction of Pleasant Street and Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic to facilitate project construction. A detour is in place that routes vehicle traffic from Pleasant Street on Elm Street, Main Street, and Pleasant Street Extension.   

Marshfield-Danville – Tuesday through Friday, motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns and minor delays on U.S. 2 from the intersection with VT 232 in Marshfield and continuing east to the intersection with VT 15 in West Danville. Flaggers and uniformed traffic officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Montpelier – Daytime work zones will be in place on Memorial Drive from the I-89 Exit 8 interchange to the intersection with U.S. 2 and on Dog River Road from the intersection with Memorial Drive to the State Highway limits. One lane of traffic in either direction will be maintained on Memorial Drive. Flaggers will facilitate alternating traffic patterns on Dog River Road. 

Northfield-Berlin – Multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will be in place on VT 12 throughout the project limits starting on Tuesday. Uniformed traffic officers will be following multiple mobile operations.  

Pittsford – Motorists are traveling over the temporary bridge. Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., traffic control will be present to allow for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7. 

Richmond – Traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a single lane of alternating travel near Bridge #29 construction. Motorists can expect a gravel surface on both approaches of the bridge site. 

Quechee Gorge Bridge – The eastbound travel lane will be closed through fall 2024. Signal permits alternating travel over the bridge. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center. 

Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project will require nighttime lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from Monday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., on U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue and U.S. BUS 4 between Ripley Road and U.S. 7. There will be intermittent side street width reductions along U.S. BUS 4. Motorists can expect limited pavement markings on U.S. 7 and U.S. BUS 4.   

Williston – A culvert replacement under VT 2A 90 feet north of the old State Police barracks begins. Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. motorists can expect one lane of travel in each direction. 

Worcester – During daytime hours, motorists should expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers over the new bridge. The bridge will be open to two-way traffic during non-working hours. Motorists are reminded to use caution while traveling through the work zone and to share the roadway with bicyclists. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
