Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) is once again inviting Vermont schools to name the State’s big orange snowplows. This year, the Agency’s goal is for young Vermonters to name all 250 full-sized plow trucks in the AOT fleet with new names that do not repeat any of the names that are now assigned to trucks.
In addition to naming a plow truck, this year Vermont schools may also enter a submission in the contest to name AOT’s new truck that has a 21-foot “wing” that will be used to clear Interstate 89.
“Our Name a Plow program has been a great success and generated a lot of fun for Vermont students and our hard-working plow drivers,” said Transportation Secretary Joe Flynn. “The program is also an effective way to teach young Vermonters about the important work that our maintenance crews do to keep the roads safe for travel throughout the winter.”
AOT’s Name a Plow program began in 2021, when public and private schools, nursery schools, and homeschooling students named 163 of the State’s full-sized plow trucks. In 2022, AOT offered the chance for schools that had not yet participated to submit a name, and 73 additional trucks were named.
To enter the Name a Plow program, the school’s principal or director should complete the online form on the AOT website at https://vtrans.vermont.gov/name-a-plow.
- Each school may submit only one name. This is not a contest. Every school that submits a name will participate. (First come, first served to name the 250 trucks.)
- The principal/director should review the name to ensure that it is appropriate and has not been used already. The list of current plow names is on the AOT Name a Plow webpage. No political or religious references, and no potentially offensive names.
- Each school’s plow name will be assigned to a plow truck at a Maintenance District garage. The sign on the truck will include the plow name and the school that named it.
- To enter the contest to name the new truck with the 21-foot wing, each principal/director must complete that section of the online form. AOT’s District Maintenance and Fleet Division employees will then vote to determine which name will go on the new truck.
- The deadline to submit a name is October 25, 2024.
AOT Maintenance District plow operators will visit the schools that name a truck this year on Thursday, November 7, at 9:00 a.m. (weather permitting) to celebrate the third annual Vermont Plow Day. Schools are invited to take photos of their students and staff with the plow truck and name sign.
