Saint Michael’s College panel of professionals to discuss the use, ethics, and future of AI today

Vermont Business Magazine A panel of Saint Michael’s College faculty members and alumni working in professions grappling with the use and ethics of artificial intelligence, or AI, will speak at the College on Tuesday, Oct. 1.   

The panel, which will take place at 5 p.m. in the Roy Room on the 3rd floor of the Dion Student Center at the college in Colchester, is titled “Artificial Intelligence Unleashed: Navigating the Nexus of Innovation, Ethics, and Tomorrow.” The panel’s title was generated using AI.  

As a rapidly emerging technology, AI has been met with both excitement and wariness as the tool has displayed both its usefulness and challenges in almost every industry. Panelists will discuss AI’s current forms and uses; some of the ethical dilemmas the technology poses and ways to face those dilemmas, including laws and policies; and how AI could evolve in the future. The panelists will also describe their own career trajectories and professional opportunities in AI.   

The panelists will include:    

·       Kellie Campbell ’08, M’12, Ed.D., Chief Information Officer at Vermont State Colleges System.  

·       Thomas Dickerson ’13, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer at Geopipe, Inc.  

·       Crystal L'Hote, Ph.D., Professor, Saint Michael’s College Department of Philosophy & Ethics  

·       James Watson ’12, Solutions Architect at Honeywell  

 

The panel will be moderated by Chris Lei, Assistant Director of Digital Media Technologies in the College’s IT Office. Lei also serves on the College’s Emergent Technology committee.   

The event is hosted by the College’s Henry “Bud” Boucher, Jr. ’69 Career Education Center and the departments of Business Administration & Accounting, Computer Science, and Philosophy & Ethics.
