BTV officials to support Burlington residents, businesses and visitors through the holidays

The City’s Great Streets Main Street project is ongoing

Vermont Business Magazine Two initiatives undertaken by Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak, Council President Traverse, and other City officials will support Burlington’s residents, visitors, and small businesses this holiday season.

Department of Public Works Director Chapin Spencer announced late last week that motorists will have normal access from I-89 down Main Street to South Winooski Avenue for the duration of the upcoming holiday season.

The City’s Great Streets Main Street project is ongoing, but will maintain vehicle traffic down Main Street to South Winooski Ave where motorists will be able to turn both right and left to access downtown public parking. The City would like to thank SD Ireland for their continued flexibility and understanding while working to find a solution.

“Ensuring that visitors, specifically those coming to our City from Interstate 89, can easily reach our downtown and Marketplace parking garages was a shared goal of DPW, the administration and the contractor”, said Director Spencer, “we are extremely pleased that we found a solution to help support our downtown.”

In addition, the City Council, with support of the Mayor, passed a resolution to allocate $60,000 in funding to provide additional overtime shifts for Burlington police officers from November 30th through December 31st.  These shifts will accommodate a pair of two officers who will provide additional patrols on the Church Street Marketplace and the surrounding area of the city center.

“These additional patrols are extremely meaningful for our downtown businesses and their employees. The additional presence of uniformed officers to add an additional layer of support to the business community and those who visit is a very welcome step”, said Business & Workforce Development Director Kara Alnasrawi, “I would also like to thank the Pomerleau Foundation for their significant support in helping to cover the cost of this vital resource.”

“I personally welcome both of these significant measures to ensure that our downtown is safe and accessible, and that residents, businesses and visitors alike experience a joyful and vibrant holiday season. We know that this time of year is critical to our locally-owned small businesses and the families that operate them.  We are also pleased to make visiting Burlington easier and more enjoyable at this busy time of year” said Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak.

“I’m thankful the Council, Mayor, and other City leaders were able to collaborate to ensure Burlington is open for business during this crucial holiday shopping season. I hope the community will join us in supporting our local business community,” said City Council President Ben Traverse.
