Call for applications: Artist Development Grants

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Arts Council is now accepting applications for its Artist Development Grants, which support artists at all stages of their careers. Artist Development Grants fund activities that enhance mastery of an artist’s craft or skills or that increase the viability of an artist's business. Funding may also support aspects of the creation of new work when the activity allows the grantee to accept a rare and important opportunity. Grants are up to $2,000, and there are two grants rounds each year.

This year, responding to feedback from artists as well as research and trends in grantmaking, we're excited to pilot a new method for selecting grantees for this grant program: random draw. Applications meeting the eligibility criteria will be selected for funding using a random draw method. To ensure geographic diversity, grants will be drawn and awarded by Creative Zone in proportion to the zone's application demand. For example, if applications from the Southern Vermont Creative Zone comprise 7% of the total applications received, the Southern Vermont Creative Zone will allocated roughly 7% of the grants made.

With this new selection process, we aim to:

  • simplify the application process for artists by significantly reducing the number of application questions and requirements
  • reduce the wait time for notification and disbursement of awards
  • ensure geographic diversity of artists served

And crucially, by removing the need for a panel review process (as well as the compensation that panelists receive for their time and expertise), we can increase the amount of total funding available for grant awards.

Also new this year, Flood Relief Funding. If 2024 flooding has significantly and adversely affected your ability to produce, perform, and/or market your work and created a need for immediate relief funds and/or assistance, flood relief is available for eligible expenses.
