VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region hosts hospice training session in St. Albans

Training for New Volunteers to Take Place at VNAHSR Office on Thursday, December 5

Vermont Business Magazine VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region (VNAHSR) will be hosting a Hospice Volunteer Training session on Thursday, December 5, from 8AM to 4PM at the VNAHSR Office (8 N. Main Street, St. Albans, VT). This comprehensive, one-day training is designed for individuals interested in becoming hospice volunteers and supporting patients and families facing serious illness.

The training session is free and open to individuals aged 16 and older who are interested in providing compassionate care and support to hospice patients. No prior healthcare or hospice experience is required. Participants must pass a background check, and pre-registration is required.

A Vital Role in Hospice Care

At VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region, volunteers are an integral part of the care team, playing a crucial role in enhancing the end-of-life experience for patients and their families. Volunteers provide companionship, emotional support, respite for caregivers and assist with various tasks, all while making a significant impact on the quality of life for those facing a life-limiting illness.

The training session will cover key topics such as:

·         Understanding the Hospice philosophy of care;

·         Setting appropriate boundaries when interacting with patients and families;

·         Communicating with patients and families;

·         Basic health and safety precautions;

·         Understanding patient confidentiality.

The Rewards of Volunteering

While hospice volunteers make a lasting impact on the lives of patients and their families, many report profound personal rewards as well. Volunteers often speak of increased appreciation for life, greater peace about the end-of-life process and a deeper understanding of the cultural differences that influence how we experience death. Volunteers also report feeling a heightened sense of fulfillment and pride from contributing to the well-being of others.

Mary Pleasant, Hospice Services Volunteer Coordinator, said, “There are two things I hear from participants of the hospice volunteer training - the first is, I wish the session didn’t have to end; and the second, I have learned so much about myself. Being with those who are dying teaches us so much about the gift of life. This training teaches volunteers how to create a sacred space of caring, honesty and love, and emphasizes the importance of presence, and the gift of time.”

Pre-registration Required

If you are interested in becoming a hospice volunteer, please pre-register by calling Mary at 802-442-0540 or emailing [email protected]. Space for the training is limited, so early registration is encouraged.
