Northeast Delta Dental Foundation Awards Grant to Support Oral Health Initiative

Vermont Business Magazine Northeast Delta Dental Foundation has awarded a substantial grant to fund a statewide initiative delivering essential dental care to underserved Vermont communities. This collaborative effort brings together the Vermont Department of Health District Offices and Office of Oral Health, Vermont’s Free & Referral Clinics, local dentists, and a committed team of clinical volunteers and community partners to bring dental care to Vermonters in need.

Over the upcoming months, a series of free pop-up dental clinics will provide vital oral healthcare and oral health education to children and adults in Vermont, focused on community members who have historically faced significant barriers to oral healthcare, though all are welcome. The first in this series of 6 clinics was held recently in Brattleboro, with much success.

“This impressive collaboration is an opportunity to address the oral health crisis by going directly into communities where it’s needed most,” said Olivia Sharrow, Executive Director of Vermont’s Free & Referral Clinics. “With the support of Northeast Delta Dental Foundation and the dedication of local dentist Dr. John Echternach, many volunteers including dental hygienists, and the district offices of the Department of Health, we’re able to bring care to people who might otherwise go without.”

The pop-up clinics will be strategically set up in areas with limited access to dental care and will offer preventive services such as fluoride varnish applications, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) treatments for decay, no-drill fillings using both SDF and glass ionomer filling material, denture checks, and free toothbrush cleanings. Attendees will also receive referrals for further treatment if needed, along with resources to maintain good oral health.

Each pop-up will be promoted in advance to the areas being served. Interpretation services will be available on-site to support attendees facing language barriers. More information will be posted in public forums as dates and locations are determined.
