May 8 Free Event Features Keynote on Valuing Health Care Work in the AI Era

Vermont Business Magazine The University of Vermont College of Nursing and Health Sciences announces the 2024 Zeigler Research Forum featuring the keynote “Make Labor Visible: Valuing Care Work in an AI Era” by Rachel “Rae” Walker, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, director of the Nursing Ph.D. program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The annual research forum highlights student and faculty research in biomedical and health sciences, communication sciences and disorders, nursing, and rehabilitation and movement science. The forum is scheduled for May 8 from 8 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in UVM's Dudley H. Davis Center.

Make Labor Visible: Valuing Care Work in an AI Era

Keynote presenter Rachel (Rae) Walker, Ph.D., RN, FAAN (they/them) will discuss valuing health care work in the era of Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Walker is an Associate Professor, Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and the only nurse Invention Ambassador for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They direct the Nursing Ph.D. Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and serve as an Associate Director of the Center for Personalized Health Monitoring, a translational science center specializing in critical analysis of AI, sensors, and mHealth.

Following service in the U.S. Peace Corps, Dr. Walker completed their nursing training, Ph.D., Certificates in Nursing Education and Health Inequities, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Their scholarship focuses on community-directed health innovation and digital defense against technologies and data regimes that cause harm. In 2023, they co-founded Health Tech for the People, a transdisciplinary collaborative focused on A.I. and tech ethics. Their advocacy for nurse-led innovation, design justice and more inclusive invention ecosystems has been featured on numerous podcasts, the TEDx stage, and in magazines such as Forbes, Scientific American, Science and on NPR.

About the Zeigler Research Forum

The Zeigler Research Forum serves as a showcase for new knowledge and provides students access to the latest advancements in health sciences. In addition to the keynote presentation, the forum will include 70 student poster presentations, a talk by the winner of the 2023 CNHS Research Incentive Award, and a series of data blitz presentations by students across CNHS departments.

Attendance is Free and Open to the Public

The Zeigler Research Forum was established in 2010 to honor Jim Zeigler, who passed away in 1984 from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma six months after graduating from UVM.
