Vermont Business Magazine GlobalFoundries (GF) recently partnered with The Governor's Institute of Vermont (GIV) to host a One Day Adventure: Engineering the Solution at GF's Essex Junction facility. During the event, students experienced the world of engineering at GF with an inside look into real engineering situations through hands-on activities, analytical problem-solving, and opportunities to collaborate. At GIV, students learn from industry professionals, participate in hands-on projects, and explore career options - all while having fun and making friends!
Following a welcome from Director of Fab 9 Operations Jean Blunt, students opened the day with a hands-on LED Helicopter activity, followed by a GaN case study presentation by GF team members.
Students then split into four "go see" groups to explore different parts of the GF facility and learn about their case study. These areas included tools in the fab, the physical failure analysis lab, the electrical failure analysis lab, and the wafer test area in the modeling lab.
After having small group discussions with early tenure GF employees over lunch, the students shared their case study findings from visiting the different stations at GF. The day concluded with a patent intro and a coffee cup exercise.
“This is a unique opportunity for high school students to pursue their passions outside of a traditional classroom setting,” says Executive Director Elizabeth Frascoia. “GIV strives to provide young people with the resources and mentorship they need to explore career options right here in Vermont. We’re so grateful for the chance to collaborate with an industry leader like GlobalFoundries in our mission to support Vermont’s youth as they discover their path forward.”
GIV offers 1-2 week residential programs, which take place on college campuses across the state and are designed to be affordable to all Vermont families with scholarships that allow students to pay as little as $10 to attend.
