VermontBiz The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Norwich University a grant in excess of $5,300,000 for cybersecurity research, education, and training. This generous funding, allocated over the next five years, enables Norwich to offer scholarships to students that will enhance learning and research opportunities into cybersecurity threats, artificial intelligence, and machine learning through an integrated B.S./M.S. program.

“The grant will give scholars additional professional development opportunities and will enable the completion of research projects in new areas of cybersecurity,” stated Dr. Huw Read, Director of the Center for Cybersecurity and Forensics Education Research (CyFER). “As future Cyber leaders, they will also develop and lead outreach endeavors by sharing their knowledge with the public. The NSF recognizes Norwich’s leadership in cybersecurity education and contribution to the United States government workforce by awarding this highly competitive grant. With scholars entering an integrated 4+1 program at Norwich, graduates will emerge with a master’s degree tailored to modern challenges surrounding artificial intelligence and machine learning.”

As the Principal Investigator, Read led the charge in securing this grant funding which is a continuation of a 2018 award of $3,586,393. Alongside Read, Dr. Matthew Bovee, Dr. Henry Collier, and Dr. Ali Al Bataineh will serve as Co-Principal Investigators. In addition, faculty members Dr. Jeremy Hansen and Dr. Jonathan Adkins will support the grant as research mentors. Their combined strong leadership and determination were pivotal in obtaining this vital funding.

The National Science Foundation stated, “In the modern era of heightened connectivity, addressing cyber threats is paramount. Norwich University aligns with the national goal of cultivating top-tier scholars and leaders in cybersecurity in government organizations.” With this grant, the National Science Foundation has reinforced Norwich’s position as a leader in cybersecurity education.

A primary objective of the award is to increase participation from veterans and underrepresented groups, cultivating diverse perspectives in cybersecurity. The funding significantly underscores the escalating necessity to recruit and retain students who will contribute to the Government's cyber-workforce in the near future. The NSF project is supported by CyberCorps ® Scholarship For Service (SFS) program. The initiative supports proposals that establish or continue scholarship programs in cybersecurity, aligning with the U.S. National Cyber Strategy to develop a superior cybersecurity workforce.
