Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will impact traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont - Week of 6/17/24. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates:
I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Motorists will be reduced to one lane of northbound travel within various construction areas from the Lamoille River Bridge (MM 102) to the Georgia Rest Area. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph throughout the project limits.
I-89 Richmond – The northbound passing lane is closed to traffic just south of Exit 11 (MM 75.45 to MM 76.79). Southbound traffic is reduced to one lane just south of Exit 11 (MM 77.29 to MM 75.71). The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in work zones. Speed enforcement will be present, and fines will be doubled.
I-89 Royalton – Work continues on the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges near Exit 3 in Royalton. A new traffic pattern is in effect until the fall of 2025. For southbound traffic, all vehicles will use the low-speed lane. For northbound traffic, all vehicles will cross over onto I-89 Southbound and then back to I-89 Northbound, north of the bridges. Traffic using the I-89 Northbound Exit 3 off-ramp will use the ramp crossover north of the bridges to the newly constructed I-89 Northbound Exit 3 off-ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones on both northbound and southbound I-89, and to 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. There will be some traffic diversions and minor delays on VT 107. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction under the bridges on VT 107.
I-91 Bradford – The I-91 Southbound permanent lane closure near Exit 16 for maintenance repairs of bridges has been shifted from the high-speed lane to the low-speed lane. Motorists should watch for this new traffic pattern. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph remains in place through the work zones.
I-91 Derby – Single-lane closures and shifting traffic patterns will be present on I-91 from the U.S./Canadian Border Station to just south of Exit 27 in both directions while a paving project continues.
I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 Southbound between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect for the remainder of the summer. Vehicles must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour along U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during school commute hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 Northbound will be in effect from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
I-91 Springfield-Hartland – Daily single-lane closures will be in place along I-91 Southbound from north of Exit 9 to just south of Exit 7 while a paving project continues. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place through the work zone. Motorists should watch for shifting traffic patterns throughout the week. Motorcyclists should use caution on grooved and uneven surfaces.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over VT 121 is underway. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 at the location of the bridges is limited to one-lane alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals Monday through Friday.
State Highways:
Bennington – Monday 6/17 through Friday 6/21 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work.
Bennington – Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures along U.S. 7 Northbound and Southbound and VT 279 from VT 9 to the New York border as necessary for installation of traffic signs. Work may continue into the weekend, if needed.
Bennington-Pownal – Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures along U.S. 7 Northbound and Southbound as necessary for traffic sign installation.
Berlin – A paving project continues on Airport Road. One-way alternating traffic patterns staffed with flaggers will be implemented later in the week between the Granger Road intersection and the Piper Road intersection. Motorcycles should use caution on grooved surfaces. Expect delays.
Berlin-Barre – A paving project continues on VT 62. Daily, single-lane closures will be in place between the intersections with Airport Road and U.S. 302. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction at all times, but motorists should watch for shifting traffic patterns throughout the week. Motorcycles should use caution on grooved surfaces.
Berlin-Barre Town – A paving project continues on VT 63, and single-lane closures will be in place. Motorists should watch for shifting traffic patterns around the work zones. Motorcycles should use caution on existing grooved surfaces.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Construction traffic to the work zone on VT 142 adjacent to the new bridge site will continue, and motorists should remain vigilant in the area. The eastbound lane shift on VT/NH 119 shortly after passing over the twin bridges into New Hampshire remains in place with signs and barrels to assist vehicles through the work zone.
Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 15 in Cambridge and Johnson. Monday 6/17 through Friday 6/21 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and traffic control with alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 in Johnson within the project limits from the VT 15/VT 108 junction in Cambridge to just east of the VT 100C intersection.
Colchester – Work is underway to improve the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and the intersection of U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 in Colchester. Sunday 6/16 at 6:00 p.m. through Friday 6/21 at 6:00 a.m., there will be single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers at the U.S. 2/U.S. 7 intersection between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily. One day next week, I-89 Southbound will be reduced to one lane in the vicinity of Exit 17 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Dummerston – From 6/17 until the evening of 6/19, U.S. 5 in Dummerston a half-mile south of Putney Village will be closed. The closure will be from the intersection of Johnsons Curve Road north to the Sunoco station in Dummerston. This closure is to repair a significant slope failure and associated culvert replacement. A fully signed detour is in place on I-91 Exit 3 in Brattleboro to Exit 4 in Putney.
Fairfax-St. Albans – Night work will occur this week from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of VT 104 and St. Albans State Highway. Motorists can expect lane closures at the intersection.
Fairfield – The replacement of the deck on Bridge #6 on VT 36, 7.7 miles west of the VT 108 junction, will begin this week. Motorists can expect one lane of alternating travel with traffic control present within the project work area.
Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway on VT 121 over the Saxtons River in Grafton. Traffic signals are in place on either end of the bridge, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge.
Hartford – From Sunday 6/16 through Thursday 6/20 during nighttime hours between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., motorists should expect minor delays and alternating one-way lane closures on U.S. 5 from the I-91 overpass at the Exit 11 interchange to Bugbee Street. From Monday 6/17 through Friday 6/21 between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., motorists should expect significant delays and alternating one-way lane closures on U.S. 5 from Lesle Drive to the Hartland town line, and from the VA Cutoff Road to Kline Drive. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Ludlow – The removal of Bridge 57 and the installation of a pedestrian bridge over the Black River is underway on Mill Street. Pleasant Street at its junction with Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic. A detour routes vehicles from Pleasant Street along Elm Street, and Main Street to Pleasant Street Extension.
Marshfield-Danville – Monday 6/17 through Friday 6/21 between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic patterns and significant delays on U.S. 2 from the Plainfield/Marshfield town line to the VT 15 intersection in West Danville. Motorists should expect a gravel road surface when traveling on U.S. 2 from Danville Hill Road to Joe’s Pond in Danville. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Montpelier – A night paving project is progressing on Memorial Drive. Between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., beginning on Sunday 6/16 and continuing through Thursday night, 6/20, single lane closures will be in place throughout the project limits. Motorists should expect stopped traffic and delays in the area of the I-89 Exit 8 ramps, where roadway widths are narrow. No work is planned on Dog River Road. Motorcycles should use caution on grooved and uneven surfaces.
Montpelier – Monday 6/17 through Friday 6/21 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic with flaggers in place to assist motorists throughout the project limits along U.S. 2 between the Bailey Avenue intersection on U.S. 2 moving east to the Berlin/Montpelier town line, and along U.S. 302 from the Middlesex/Montpelier town line moving east to the Memorial Drive intersection. Work will also be conducted at the U.S. 2 and U.S. 302 intersection, moving east to the Montpelier/Berlin town line.
Morristown – Motorists should expect occasional lane closures using flaggers during daytime hours on VT 15 in Morristown (MM 0.319-0.339) due to a culvert installation. The work is taking place between East Main Street in Hyde Park to Needles Eye Road in Morristown. Construction will be active at the inlet and outlet of the culvert. Motorists can expect occasional lane closures using flaggers during daytime hours and are advised to use caution when driving through the area.
Northfield-Berlin – Multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic will be in place throughout the length of a paving project on VT 12. Motorcyclists should continue to use caution on grooved surfaces. Expect delays.
Pittsford – Motorists are now shifted onto the temporary bridge at the U.S. 7 and VT 3 intersection. Traffic control will be present throughout this week's work hours allowing for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7.
Quechee Gorge Bridge – The eastbound travel lane of the Quechee Gorge Bridge is closed through November 2024. New travel patterns include alternating travel controlled by a traffic signal and a concrete barrier to separate motorists from workers.
Richmond – Traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and will utilize a single lane of alternating travel.
Richmond-Bolton – Traffic control will be present with one lane of alternating travel on U.S. 2 between Kenyon Road and Lemroy Court for night work Monday through Thursday between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Traffic control will also be present on U.S. 2 between Lemroy Court and Cochran Road Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., also utilizing one lane of alternating travel.
Royalton – The bridge realignment project on VT 14 near Vesper Road and Meadow Lane is ongoing. Traffic will be restricted to one-way alternating flow in the project area, controlled by flaggers between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drivers are advised to use caution when driving through the area.
Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project is in progress in Rutland. Sunday 6/16 at 7:00 p.m. through Friday 6/21 at 7:00 a.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers along U.S. 4 between Gleason Road and U.S. 7, and along U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue. Please note that roadway surfaces will be grooved and uneven with raised manhole structures throughout the project area.
St Albans-Sheldon – A paving project is underway on VT 105. Alternating one-lane traffic is expected between U.S. 7 in St Albans to Pour Farm Road in Sheldon.
Woodstock – A culvert replacement project is ongoing on U.S. 4 near Valley View Rd. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic between Valley View Rd and Blake Hill Way, controlled by flaggers between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Worcester – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic maintained by traffic signals over the temporary bridge on VT 12 over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Flaggers will also be present to assist with traffic. The speed limit over the temporary bridge has been reduced to 25 mph. The posted speed limit entering and exiting the work zone is 40 mph. Motorists may encounter trucks entering and exiting the work zone.
