Innovative learning series aims to address Vermont’s Mental Health and Substance Use Crisis
Vermont Business Magazine More than two hundred Vermont counselors, social workers, nurses, health care providers, and other health and human service professionals will come together on June 14th as part of the Collaborative to Advance Mental Health Treatment and Substance Use Recovery for Everyone (C.A.R.E).
The Whole Person Care: Enhancing Substance Use Disorder & Mental Health Treatment conference is centered around the importance of holistic care for people with Substance Use and Mental Health concerns.
Dr. Saroyan, Executive Director of the Blueprint for Health states, “In order to address the complexities of mental health and substance use concerns, we need to look at the whole person - their strengths, their supports, their resource needs, their physical health, their goals.”
The conference will cover topics from addressing social needs of Vermonters, to supporting teens during critical years of brain development, to helping those who are pregnant, parenting, or involved with the justice system.
Dr. Frances Jensen, author of The Teenage Brain: A Neuroscientist’s Survival Guide to Raising Adolescents & Young Adults, will discuss recent developments in adolescent brain research and how this can help providers better understand and impact the health and well-being of young people.
Other speakers will highlight:
· Coordinating with social service providers around needs such as housing, food, transportation, and finances.
· Treating Substance Use Disorders for people with involvement with the criminal justice system and on how care teams can coordinate with justice agencies.
· Providing Substance Use Disorder care for pregnant and parenting people.
The session will also host a panel on trauma-informed substance use disorder care involving Vermonters.
Dr. Saroyan adds, “This work takes a team and today's conference is all about honoring the team, including the individuals at the center, while also thinking creatively about how to continue to push things forward.”
