Vermont Business Magazine The Fletcher Free Library is excited to announce that three government grants will support preservation work to protect and preserve its historic 1904 Carnegie Building. A $500,000 grant from Save America’s Treasures, in tandem with grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the State Historic Preservation Office, will enable preservation work to begin in 2025.
The Save America’s Treasures grant is awarded through the Historic Preservation Fund, as administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior. These grants will receive matching funds from the City of Burlington.
This building is one of four public Carnegie Libraries in Vermont and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Preservation work will include window restoration, brick repointing and repair, and terra cotta work.
“We are grateful to Senator Patrick Leahy for his Congressional Directed Spending Request for the Save America’s Treasures grant,” said Fletcher Free Library Director Mary Danko. ”The Senator has been a champion of public libraries throughout his career and his unwavering support will be honored in the restoration and preservation of the largest public library in the state of Vermont, which will continue to serve our community for generations to come.”
The Fletcher Free Library’s Restoration & Preservation Project grant acceptance for the 1904 Carnegie Building portion of the Library is on the agenda for the August 5 City Council Board of Finance meeting and the August 12 City Council meeting. Members of the public wishing to comment on it may contact Mary Danko, library director, at [email protected] or may present questions at the public comment portion of the meeting.
