US National Weather Service Update
Isolated Storms & More Flooding Possible Today
Agency of Commerce and Community Development The US National Weather Service states, "Isolated strong thunderstorms and embedded downpours could result in more flooding and localized strong to damaging wind gusts this afternoon into evening. Parts of Caledonia County and the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont received 6-8 inches of rain last night and saw considerable/catastrophic flash flooding. If thunderstorms travel over the same areas that had heavy rainfall and flooding last night, more flash flooding is possible."
Storm Causes Serious Damage in Caledonia, Essex Counties
Early this morning, several inches of rain fell throughout the Northeast Kingdom, washing out roads and prompting swift water rescue teams to be dispatched to conduct rescues from flooded areas.
Damage to homes and infrastructure is widespread in communities in and around the Northeast Kingdom, including, but not limited to, St. Johnsbury, Lyndon, Morgan, East Burke, and Island Pond.
Roads throughout the area are washed out and continue to be at risk. The St. Johnsbury Police Department has issued a shelter-in-place order asking residents and visitors to restrict travel unless it is a life safety issue.

Flooding is extremely traumatizing and for Vermonters who experienced losses in last summer’s floods, this event can be particularly difficult. Here is some advice from Vermont’s Mental Health Commissioner Emily Hawes:
- Stay informed, but limit news exposure. Take media breaks to protect your mental health.
- Rely only on trusted sources for information.
- Keep in regular contact with family and friends.
- Acknowledge your feelings. Anxiety, fear, and a sense of helplessness are natural.
- Prioritize self-care including getting enough rest.
If you need to talk to someone you can call access Starting Over Strong Vermont by calling 211. You can also call 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which will connect you to someone locally.
