Vermont Business Magazine As part of MENTOR Vermont’s annual Youth Mentoring Celebration, Senator Jane Kitchel, D-Caledonia, from Danville, Vermont, received their first State Legislator of the Year Award. Senator Kitchel has served in the Vermont Legislature as a Senator since 2005 and as the Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee since 2011. In 2023, she was instrumental in ensuring that the Vermont mentoring field, through MENTOR Vermont, received their first significant increase in state funding since 2007. This increase allowed MENTOR Vermont to provide significantly more funding to mentoring programs this school year and to match more Vermont youth with mentors.
In support of mentoring, Senator Kitchel said, “It takes a whole lot of people to make a difference, but one person can really make a difference and there is no better prevention than providing a child with a trusted adult.”
MENTOR Vermont, in partnership with youth mentoring programs, youth mentees, volunteer mentors, legislators, and business supporters, celebrated Vermont Mentoring Month at MENTOR Vermont’s annual Youth Mentoring Celebration at the Vermont Statehouse on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
Comcast and MENTOR Vermont partnered for the ninth straight year to recognize the 2024 Vermont Ambassadors of Mentoring. These youth mentees and adult mentors have committed to working with MENTOR Vermont to raise awareness of the benefits of youth mentoring, the necessity for greater State investment in youth mentoring, and the need for more volunteer mentors to ensure young people in Vermont have supportive mentoring relationships they need to thrive.
“Comcast has a long-standing partnership with MENTOR Vermont, and we are proud to have been supporting their efforts to enrich the lives of young people for over a decade,” said Carolyne Hannan, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Western New England Region, which includes Vermont. “We commend the work they do to match kids with positive role models and are extremely pleased to join them in recognizing this year’s mentors and mentees from across the Green Mountain State.”
This year’s Ambassadors of Mentoring matches were honored at the 2024 Youth Mentoring Celebration in Montpelier where youth mentees, volunteer adult mentors, program staff, and supporters, were celebrated by Monica Hutt, Vermont’s Chief Prevention Officer. She read Governor Phil Scott’s Proclamation, officially recognizing January 2024 as Mentoring Month in Vermont. The Ambassador matches then shared the benefits of their mentoring relationship over lunch with their legislators in the Vermont Statehouse.
MENTOR Vermont’s 2024 Vermont Mentoring Month campaign was made possible through the continued support of Ambassadors of Mentoring sponsor Comcast and other generous event sponsors. To learn more about the event and supporting sponsors, please visit www.mentorvt.org/national-mentoring-month.
