Norwich University appoints Gobeille and McDermott trustees

Vermont Business Magazine Following its most recent winter meeting, Norwich University officials announced two new additions to the Board of Trustees. Following these appointments, the Board will comprise of 33 trustees, 25 of whom are Norwich University graduates.

Alfred J. Gobeille ’86, P’18, known as Al, graduated from Norwich University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Al will serve a five-year term and be a member of the Budget and Finance, Facilities and Human Resources committees.

While at Norwich, Al was a student in the Corps of Cadets, played on the Football and Rugby Teams and was a member of the Military Police unit. Following graduation, he commissioned for the US Army. Al served on Norwich’s Board of Fellows Business & Management Committee from 2006 – 2011 and has attended several NUcleus trips over the years.

Al’s career is shaped by the twin devotions of public service and entrepreneurship. Al’s passion for public service started at Norwich University and grew as he served as a US Army Officer. After completing his years of service, Al relocated to the Burlington area with his wife Kim where, together, they operated Gobeille Hospitality on the beautiful shores of Lake Champlain for almost 30 years. The Boston Globe has recognized their Chowder as one of the 9 best in New England and their “Maple Creemees” have been regularly voted best local Ice Cream. 

In 2011, then-Governor Peter Shumlin selected Al to serve on the Green Mountain Care Board, a board that oversaw all health policy and regulation in the State. Governor Shumlin selected Al as Chair of the Board in 2013 and he led the team that worked tirelessly to negotiate Vermont’s All Payer Model waiver, setting the State on a path to improve health quality and reduce cost growth. 

In 2017, Al was asked to serve as the Secretary of Human services under Governor Phil Scott. With over 4,000 employees and a $2.6 billion dollar budget, Al created teams, structures, and policies to improve services for Vermonters while reducing spending. 

In 2019, Al was named the inaugural Chief Operating Officer for the University of Vermont Health Network. Al led the 14,000-employee enterprise through the pandemic challenges. 

Al’s passion for community, belief in the potential of all people, and determination to leave things better than he found it guides everything he does. Al and Kim live in Shelburne and have three adult children and one awesome grandson Bobby.

Vincent T. McDermott ’90, known as Vin, graduated from Norwich University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Accounting. He also obtained a Master of Accounting (MSA) and a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA), both from Suffolk University, Boston, MA. Vin will serve a five-year term and be a member of the Budget and Finance, Student Affairs and Audit committees.

Vincent T. McDermott ’90

While at Norwich, Vin played hockey and golf, was a member of the Skull and Swords, Honor Committee, Jr. Ring Committee and Accounting Society. Vin served on Norwich’s Board of Fellows Business & Management committee from 2015 – 2021 and has attended a few NUcleus trips.

Vin is the Sr. Vice President, Finance & Chief Financial Officer for Mass General Brigham Community Division in Boston, MA. Vin serves as the senior finance executive across the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Community Division including six hospitals, MGB Healthcare at Home, MGB Home Hospital, MGB Medical Group & MGB Population Health. 

He is responsible for determining the financial direction of this $4 billion & 12,000 FTE division of MGB, including strategic and operational matters as well as critical current and future partnerships. He leads the financial planning process for the MGB Community Division and ensures that operational and capital budgets are aligned with Mass General Brigham’s system-wide strategies, goals, and objectives.

He currently serves on several Boards across the Northeast. Additionally, he is a guest lecturer at Harvard Medical School in their master’s degree programs on the topic of advanced financial models.
