Subject: Official Declaration of Candidacy for Speaker of the House Filed with Secretary of State
Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to share that I have formally notified the Secretary of State of my candidacy for Speaker of the House. In accordance with Vermont statute (2 V.S.A. § 12), this ensures my name will appear on the ballot on the first day of the legislative session, January 8. If there are two candidates, the election will be conducted by secret ballot, managed by the Secretary of State, early on in the schedule for the first day of the session.
First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude for the advice, counsel, and encouragement I’ve received from members across the political spectrum over the past six months. Your insights have strengthened this campaign and underscored the need for leadership that unites.
I practice a leadership style that prioritizes openness, collaboration, and respect. This campaign is about creating a culture in the House that is grounded in transparency, fairness, and trust—qualities that are essential for us to meet this moment and deliver needed results for Vermonters.
My life and work have repeatedly shown me that the greatest challenges also present the greatest opportunities. In moments of urgency, people often step beyond entrenched positions and find common ground. I’ve seen this in my work on flood recovery before joining the legislature, in our nearly unanimous multi-year efforts to expand broadband, through collaborations during the pandemic and recent flooding, and in tackling our current workforce shortages.
Today, Vermont is faced with urgent challenges in our education system, healthcare finance, housing, public safety, and affordability. Vermonters expect us to meet these challenges head-on and work together in a way that inspires more confidence in our ability to govern. We cannot afford to let entrenched divisions or an unwillingness to adapt hold us back. Literally and figuratively, nothing changes if nothing changes.
As Speaker, I will work to ensure the House is more effective because it is transparent, collaborative, and communicative with all members, our Senate colleagues, the administration, the press, and, most importantly, the Vermonters we serve. This includes ensuring that all committees are well-led, well-supported and with disagreements managed in a way that moves us forward productively.
I bring to this campaign a proven history of public service, transparency, and leadership through collaboration. I am excited about the opportunity to set a new course for the House. I look forward to earning your support on January 8th and working together to transform Vermont’s challenges into opportunities to shape our state’s future.
Sincerely,
Rep. Laura Sibilia
