Burlington to open emergency cold weather shelter Saturday to Monday

Vermont Business Magazine Today, Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak announced that the City of Burlington will open a cold weather emergency shelter at the Miller Center at 130 Gosse Court this weekend. Hours of operation will be Saturday, December 21 and Sunday, December 22 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 AM.

The National Weather Service is currently forecasting evening temperatures diving below zero with windchill on Saturday, December 21, and Sunday, December 22. The State of Vermont defines an extreme cold weather emergency using a threshold of –20 degrees Fahrenheit with the windchill factor.

The City is acting to open additional shelter this weekend based on a number of factors, including: current estimates indicate upwards of 250 people are sleeping unsheltered in the region, with many rough sleeping; efforts to stand up additional low barrier shelter have been delayed until after the New Year; the State motel program is at capacity with upwards of 350 eligible households unable to get a room.

While the City is leading this effort, it would not be possible without the partnership of the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) or the funding support of the Vermont Agency of Human Services.
