Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of August 26, 2024. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates:
I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Between Exit 19 in St. Albans and the Lamoille River Bridge in Milton (MM 102), traffic will be reduced to one lane southbound Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday 9 a.m. to noon, and traffic will be reduced to one lane northbound Sunday through Thursday 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the construction area. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone.
I-89 Richmond – On I-89 south of Exit 11, motorists will encounter daily lane closures Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. northbound and southbound. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. Speed enforcement will be present, and fines will be doubled.
I-89 Royalton – Work continues on the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges near Exit 3 in Royalton. A new traffic pattern is in effect until fall 2025: For southbound traffic, all vehicles will use the low-speed lane. For northbound traffic, all vehicles will cross over onto I-89 South and then back to I-89 North north of the bridges. Traffic using the I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp will use the ramp crossover north of the bridges to the newly constructed I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones on northbound and southbound I-89, and to 25 mph on the Exit 3 off ramp. When work is occurring over VT 107, traffic on VT 107 will be diverted to avoid being directly under the work. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph with a 14’ height restriction under the bridges on VT 107.
I-91 Bradford – Maintenance repairs of bridges continue just north of Exit 16 on I-91 southbound where a permanent lane closure has been established. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph remains in place through the work zone.
I-91 Derby – A paving project continues on I-91 where shifting single-lane closures in both directions will be encountered from the U.S./Canada border to south of Exit 27. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place through the work zones.
I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 Southbound between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect for the remainder of the summer into the fall. Vehicles must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during morning and afternoon commuting hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 Northbound will be in effect Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
I-91 Springfield-Hartland – Lane closures will be in place on I-91 South from north of Exit 9 to just south of Exit 7. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect through the work zone. The on- and off-ramps for Exits 7, 8, and 9 will remain open during final pavement marking, but motorists should be aware of limited widths, speed reductions, and shifting traffic patterns.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on I-91 over VT 121. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 at the I-91 overpass is reduced to one-lane alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals Monday through Friday.
State Highways:
Bennington – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work.
Berlin – Nighttime single-lane closures are planned for Wednesday or Thursday night on Berlin State Highway from the on/off ramps with VT 62 to the intersection with U.S. 302. Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction. Motorists should watch for wet paint.
Berlin-Barre – Night work in the intersection of VT 62, Airport Road, and Fisher Road will continue Sunday night through Friday morning 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. A uniformed traffic officer will be present to direct traffic, and the signal may be turned off as needed. Motorists should be aware of grooved and uneven surfaces and temporary pavement markings. Nighttime lane closures are planned on VT 62 from the Exit 7 interchange to the intersection with U.S. 302 for pavement marking on Wednesday or Thursday night.
Berlin-Barre Town – A single-lane closure is planned for milling and paving a small portion of VT 63 near the intersection with Miller Road on Monday afternoon. One lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Construction traffic will continue to enter and exit the work zone for the new bridge from VT 142 and Depot Street. Construction of the intersection with VT 142 will require alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers.
Cambridge-Belvidere – A resurfacing project on VT 109 at its intersection with VT 108 in Cambridge to its intersection with VT 118 in Belvidere will cause one lane of alternating traffic Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in multiple areas.
Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 15. Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Friday from 6 a.m. to12 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 from just east of its intersection with VT 100C in the Village of Johnson to the VT 15/ VT 108 junction in Cambridge.
Colchester – Improvements are underway at the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and the U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 intersection. Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on U.S. 2 between the I-89 bridge and Jasper Mine Road. Delays are expected on U.S. 2. I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 southbound, with a temporary closure of the I-89 northbound off-ramp right-turn slip lane from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fairfield – The deck replacement continues on Bridge #6 on VT 36, 7.7 miles west of the VT 108 junction. Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic control will be present allowing for intermittent one-lane of alternate travel.
Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway for Bridge 20 on VT 121 over the Saxtons River. Temporary traffic signals are installed to allow alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge 24/7. Overweight vehicles are not permitted to cross the existing bridge and are advised to seek an alternate route until traffic is shifted to the new bridge this fall.
Hartford – Monday through Thursday during nighttime hours, motorists should expect minimal delays with traffic shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 from the intersection of Hartford Avenue and North Main Street to Veteran’s Drive and on the Hartford Avenue bridge over the White River between North Main Street and VT 14. During daytime hours, motorists should expect minor delays with traffic shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 and sideroads from the Hartford/Hartland town line to Veteran’s Drive. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Hubbardton – Slope stabilization work continues on VT 30 between Hortonia Road and Columbia Drive. Motorists should expect alternating one-directional traffic at all hours controlled by a temporary traffic signal or flaggers and should be prepared to stop as they approach the work zone.
Ludlow – Pleasant Street at the junction of Pleasant Street and Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic to facilitate project construction. A detour is in place that routes vehicle traffic from Pleasant Street to Elm Street, Main Street, and Pleasant Street Extension.
Marshfield-Danville – Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns and moderate delays on U.S. 2 from the Plainfield/Marshfield town line to the VT 15 intersection in West Danville. Motorists should expect a gravel road surface when traveling on U.S. 2 near Joe’s Pond in West Danville. Flaggers and uniform traffic officers will assist motorists through the work zone.
Morristown – Motorists should expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours on VT 15 in Morristown (MM 0.319-0.339) due to a culvert installation. The work is taking place between East Main Street in Hyde Park and Needles Eye Road in Morristown. Construction will be active at the inlet and outlet of the culvert. Motorists can expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours and are advised to use caution when driving through the area.
Northfield-Berlin – Multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic will be in place on VT 12 throughout the project limits while a paving project continues. Driveway and side road work is scheduled, and flaggers will be present to help direct traffic through impacted intersections. Expect delays.
Pittsford – Motorists are traveling over the temporary bridge. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic control will be present to allow for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7.
Pownal-Dorset – Motorists traveling on U.S.7 North and South from Pownal to Dorset should expect lane/shoulder closures as necessary to allow for installation of signs, ground mounted, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
Richmond – Traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a single lane of alternating travel near Bridge #29 construction. Motorist can expect a gravel surface on the eastern end of the bridge site.
Royalton – The final pavement lift has been placed under the new bridge, and the minimum clearance of 14’-6” was obtained and will remain on VT 14 in Royalton between Vesper Road and Meadow Lane. Motorists should expect daily lane closures with flaggers throughout the week directing alternating one-way traffic.
Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project will require nighttime lane closures with alternating one-way traffic from Sunday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., on U.S. 4 between Gleason Road and U.S. 7, U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue, and U.S. BUS 4 between Ripley Road and U.S. 7. Intermittent width reductions will affect intersecting side streets on U.S. 4 and U.S. 7. Expect grooved and uneven surfaces with raised structures and limited pavement markings. By 7 a.m. Monday and Tuesday, U.S. 4 between Bellevue Avenue and St. John Street/Hillside Road and U.S. 7 between Kendall Avenue/Temple Street and just north of Field Avenue will be reconfigured to a single lane in each direction with a center two-way left-turn lane, respectively. Pay attention to traffic pattern changes and follow pavement markings, roadway signage, and traffic signals.
Woodstock – A culvert replacement project is ongoing on U.S. 4 near Valley View Road. U.S. 4 is open to traffic with a dip in the roadway where the new culvert is located. One lane of alternating traffic is expected Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with flaggers. After work hours, the roadway will be open to two lanes of traffic.
Worcester – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic maintained by traffic signals over the temporary bridge on VT 12 over the North Branch of the Winooski River. The speed limit over the temporary bridge has been reduced to 25 mph. The posted speed limit entering and exiting the work zone is 40 mph.
