Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of August 19, 2024. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates:
I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Between Exit 19 in St. Albans and the Lamoille River Bridge in Milton (MM 102), traffic will be reduced to one lane southbound Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on lane northbound from Sunday through Friday 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. northbound. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the construction area. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone.
I-89 Richmond – Motorists will encounter daily lane closures on I-89 south of Exit 11 Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. in both the northbound and southbound lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. Speed enforcement will be present, and fines will be doubled.
I-91 Bradford – Maintenance repairs of bridges continue just north of Exit 16 on I-91 southbound where a permanent lane closure has been established. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph remains in place through the work zone.
I-91 Derby – A paving project continues on I-91 where single-lane closures will be in place southbound daily from the U.S./Canada border to south of Exit 27 and northbound Wednesday through Friday between Exit 27 and Exit 28. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place through the work zones.
I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 South between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect for the remainder of the summer. Vehicles must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during morning and afternoon commuting hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 Northbound will be in effect Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I-91 Springfield-Hartland – Lane closures will be in place on I-91 South from north of Exit 9 to just south of Exit 7. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect through the work zone. The on- and off-ramps for Exits 7, 8, and 9 will remain open during final pavement marking, but motorists should be aware of limited widths, speed reductions, shifting traffic patterns, and wet paint.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on I-91 over VT 121. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 at the I-91 overpass is reduced to one-lane alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals Monday through Friday.
State Highways:
Bennington – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work.
Berlin/Berlin-Barre – No traffic impacts are planned for Sunday and Monday nights on VT 62 and Berlin State Highway. Nighttime lane closures are scheduled Tuesday night through Friday morning on the approaches, slip ramps, and in the intersection of VT 62, Airport Road, and Fisher Road. A uniformed traffic officer will be on site to direct traffic in the intersection, and the signal may be turned off as needed. Motorists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces as well as limited pavement markings.
Berlin-Barre Town – A single-lane closure is planned for milling a small portion of VT 63 near the intersection with Miller Road on Wednesday morning. One lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions. Motorists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Construction traffic will continue to enter and exit the work zone for the new bridge from VT 142 and Depot Street. Eastbound travelers on VT/NH 119 are reminded that there is a new traffic pattern shortly after leaving Vermont.
Cambridge-Belvidere – A resurfacing project on VT 109 at its intersection with VT 108 in Cambridge to its intersection with VT Route 118 in Belvidere will cause one lane of alternating traffic Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in multiple areas.
Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 15. Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 from just east of its intersection with VT 100C in the Village of Johnson to the VT 15/ VT 108 junction in Cambridge.
Colchester – Improvements are underway at the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and the U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 intersection. From Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road, and on U.S. 2 between the I-89 bridge and Jasper Mine Road. Delays are expected on U.S. 7 and U.S. 2. I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 North and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 South, with an intermittent lane width reduction on the northbound off-ramp. On Monday, traffic will shift from the existing I-89 southbound off-ramp to the new off-ramp.
Fairfield – The deck replacement continues on Bridge #6 on VT 36, 7.7 miles west of the VT 108 junction. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic control will be present allowing for intermittent one-lane of alternate travel.
Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway for Bridge 20 on VT 121 over the Saxtons River. Temporary traffic signals are installed to allow alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge 24/7. Overweight vehicles are not permitted to cross the existing bridge and are advised to seek an alternate route until traffic is shifted to the new bridge this fall.
Hartford – On Sunday evening, the slip ramp on the I-91 northbound off-ramp will be permanently removed. Sunday through Thursday during nighttime hours, motorists can expect minimal delays with lane shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 between Bugbee Street and VT 14. Monday through Friday during daytime hours, motorists should expect significant delays on U.S. 5 from the Hartford/Hartland town line to the intersection of the on-ramps for I-91 south and I-89, U.S. 5 from the intersection of North Main Street and Hartford Avenue continuing just north of Devin Street, and U.S. 5 from the intersection of the on-ramps for I-91 south and I-89 to the intersection of North Main Street and Hartford Avenue. Flaggers and uniformed traffic officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Ludlow – Pleasant Street at the junction of Pleasant Street and Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic to facilitate project construction. A detour is in place that routes vehicle traffic from Pleasant Street along Elm Street, Main Street, and Pleasant Street Extension.
Marshfield-Danville – Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns and moderate delays on U.S. 2 from the Plainfield/Marshfield town line to the VT 15 intersection in West Danville. Motorists should expect a gravel road surface when traveling on U.S. 2 near Joe’s Pond in West Danville. Flaggers and uniform traffic officers will assist motorists through the work zone.
Montpelier – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists may experience intermittent alternating one-way traffic with flaggers in place to assist motorists on U.S. 2 (State Street) between Bailey Avenue and Taylor Street.
Montpelier – The Montpelier Park and Ride on Dog River Road is scheduled to be closed for paving Monday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. An electronic message board at the east end of the Park and Ride will post any updates to the date and time of this work. Alternating one-way traffic facilitated by flaggers will be present on Dog River Road Monday through Friday for driveway and side road work. No traffic impacts are planned for Memorial Drive.
Morristown – Motorists should expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours on VT 15 in Morristown (MM 0.319-0.339) due to a culvert installation. The work is taking place between East Main Street in Hyde Park and Needles Eye Road in Morristown. Construction will be active at the inlet and outlet of the culvert. Motorists can expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours and are advised to use caution when driving through the area.
Northfield-Berlin – Multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic will be in place on VT 12 throughout the project limits while a paving project continues. Driveway and side road work is scheduled, and flaggers will be present to help direct traffic through intersections. Expect delays.
Pittsford – Motorists are traveling over the temporary bridge. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic control will be present to allow for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7.
Quechee Gorge Bridge – The eastbound travel lane will be closed through fall 2024. Signal permits alternating travel over the bridge. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.
Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project will require nighttime lane closures from Sunday night to Saturday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., on U.S. 4 between Gleason Road and U.S. 7, U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue, and U.S. BUS 4 between Ripley Road and U.S. 7. Intermittent width reductions will affect intersecting side streets. Traffic control will allow alternating one-way traffic. Expect grooved and uneven surfaces with raised structures. By 7 a.m. Saturday, U.S. 4 between Bellevue Avenue and St. John Street/Hillside Road will be reconfigured to a single lane in each direction with a center two-way left-turn lane. Pay attention to traffic pattern changes and follow pavement markings, roadway signage, and traffic signals.
Williston – A culvert replacement will begin under VT 2A 90 feet north of the old State Police barracks. Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., motorists will encounter minimal or no traffic impacts.
Woodstock – A culvert replacement project is ongoing on U.S. 4 near Valley View Road. U.S. 4 is open to traffic with a dip in the roadway where the new culvert is located. One lane of alternating traffic is expected Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with flaggers. After work hours, the roadway will be open to two lanes of traffic.
Worcester – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic maintained by traffic signals over the temporary bridge on VT 12 over the North Branch of the Winooski River. The speed limit over the temporary bridge has been reduced to 25 mph. The posted speed limit entering and exiting the work zone is 40 mph.
