Vermont Business Magazine For 100 years the American transportation network has largely served the needs of car drivers, and we’re now realizing the impacts of that focus: communities separated by highways, traffic congestion clogging cities, a national obesity epidemic, poor air and water quality, and limited other transportation choices available. Where do we go from here?
To understand what factors may change people’s transportation behaviors in our region, the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) has created a 10-minute online survey, with the incentive of a gift card raffle for completing the survey: https://tinyurl.com/TransportationOptionsSurvey.
The survey is part of the CCRPC’s effort to create a Regional Transportation Options Plan and will help them understand which transportation modes—such as bus, carpool, bike, walk, etc.—people are interested in, how those modes can be implemented or improved, and at what potential cost. For example, if people would take the bus more often if routes were closer to home and work, and buses came more frequently, then what would it take to make that happen? Similarly, how could communities in Chittenden County double the number of people choosing to walk and bike?
If those types of goals seem ambitious, it’s because they are – but ambitious doesn’t have to mean impossible. The CCRPC’s Long Range Transportation Plan outlines measures that will help Chittenden County meet its transportation, land use, climate and energy goals, but it doesn’t provide a clear framework for action. With the help of the public and partners, the Regional Transportation Options Plan will include prioritized actions, proposed timeline, anticipated costs, and responsible entities.
People taking the survey can indicate if they’re interested in participating in a focus group to talk more in depth about their transportation preferences. The survey closes August 18 with the raffle winner selected August 19.
