AOT Road Construction Report for the Week of August 5

Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of August 5, 2024. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.    

Interstates:  

I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., traffic will be reduced to one lane southbound between Exit 19 in St. Albans and the Lamoille River Bridge in Milton (MM 102). The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the construction area. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone.      

I-89 Richmond – Work continues on I-89 in Richmond south of Exit 11. Northbound traffic will be traveling in the southbound passing lane just south of Exit 11 (MM 75.45 to MM 76.79). The southbound passing lane is closed to southbound traffic just south of Exit 11 (MM 77.29 to MM 75.71). The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. Speed enforcement will be present, and fines will be doubled. 

I-89 Royalton – Work continues on the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges near Exit 3 in Royalton. A new traffic pattern is in effect until fall 2025: For southbound traffic, all vehicles will use the low-speed lane. For northbound traffic, all vehicles will cross over onto I-89 South and then back to I-89 North north of the bridges. Traffic using the I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp will use the ramp crossover north of the bridges to the newly constructed I-89 North Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones on northbound and southbound I-89, and to 25 mph on the Exit 3 off ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction under the bridges on VT 107.         

I-91 Bradford – Maintenance repairs of bridges continue just north of Exit 16 on I-91 southbound where a permanent lane closure remains in place. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is active through the work zone. 

I-91 Derby – A paving project continues on I-91 where daytime single-lane closures will be in place in both directions from south of Exit 27 to the U.S./Canada border. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place through the work zones. 

I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 South between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect for the remainder of the summer. Vehicles must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during morning and afternoon commuting hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 Northbound will be in effect Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please expect delays while rolling roadblocks are in effect. 

I-91 Springfield-Hartland – Multiple single-lane closures will be in place on I-91 South from north of Exit 9 to just south of Exit 7. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect through the work zones. The on and off ramps at Exits 7, 8, and 9 are scheduled to remain open, however, shifting traffic patterns and reduced speeds may be encountered. 

I-91 Westminster  A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over VT 121 is underway. Travel is reduced to one lane across both the northbound and southbound bridges with a speed reduction to 55 mph. An alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 at the location of the I-91overpass.    

State Highways:  

Bennington – Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work.     

Berlin – Nighttime, single-lane closures will continue on Berlin State Highway from the on/off ramps with VT 62 to the intersection with U.S. 302. From Sunday night through Friday morning between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction. Motorcycles should use caution on milled and uneven surfaces. 

Berlin-Barre – Sunday night through Friday morning between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., nighttime lane closures will be in place on VT 62 from the I-89 Exit 7 interchange to the intersection with Airport Road and in the vicinity of the Berlin Street intersection. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. Motorists should be aware of grooved and uneven surfaces as well as temporary pavement markings. 

Berlin-Barre Town – A paving project continues on VT 63, and daytime single-lane closures will be in place from the I-89 Exit 6 interchange to VT 14.  

Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Construction traffic will continue to enter and exit the work zone for the new bridge from VT 142 and Depot Street. Concrete-truck traffic is planned for Monday and Wednesday. Motorists should watch for changing traffic patterns in the eastbound lane of VT/NH 119 just after the twin bridges in New Hampshire as early as next week. 

Cambridge-Belvidere – A resurfacing project on VT 109 from its intersection with VT 108 in Cambridge to its intersection with VT 118 in Belvidere will cause one lane of alternating traffic Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in multiple areas. 

Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 15. Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 from just east of its intersection with VT 100C in the Village of Johnson to the VT 15/ VT 108 junction in Cambridge. 

Colchester – Work is underway to improve the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and intersection of U.S. 2 and U.S. 7. Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., there will be alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road and on U.S. 2 between U.S. 7 and Jasper Mine Road. I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 southbound. Motorists should expect delays on U.S. 7 and U.S. 2. 

Fairfield – The deck replacement continues on Bridge #6 on VT 36, 7.7 miles west of the VT 108 junction. Traffic control will be present allowing for one lane of alternate travel. 

Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway for Bridge 20 on VT 121 over the Saxtons River. Temporary traffic signals are installed to allow alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge 24/7. Overweight vehicles are not permitted to cross the existing bridge and are advised to seek an alternate route until traffic is shifted to the new bridge this fall. 

Hartford – Sunday through Thursday during nighttime hours, motorists should expect minimal delays with lane shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 between Bugbee Street and VT 14. Monday through Friday during daytime hours, motorists should expect significant delays on U.S. 5 from the Hartford/Hartland town line to the intersection of the on-ramps for I-91 south and I-89, U.S. 5 from the intersection of North Main Street and Hartford Avenue continuing just north of Devin Street, and U.S. 5 from the intersection of the on-ramps for I-91 south and I-89 to the intersection of North Main Street and Hartford Avenue. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are strongly encouraged to plan ahead for major delays, reduce speed, and travel with caution through the work zone. 

Hartford – Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on VT 14 between Christian Street and Park Street near Bridge #7 over the White River and Town Highway 98.   

Hubbardton – Slope stabilization work continues on VT 30 between Hortonia Road and Columbia Drive. The southbound lane remains closed to traffic all hours for the duration of the project. Motorists should be prepared to stop as they approach the work zone and then get routed through the northbound lane in alternating one-way traffic by flaggers or a temporary traffic signal. 

Ludlow – Pleasant Street at the junction of Pleasant Street and Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic to facilitate project construction. A detour is in place that routes vehicle traffic from Pleasant Street on Elm Street, Main Street, and Pleasant Street Extension. 

Marshfield-Danville – Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns and moderate delays on U.S. 2 from the Plainfield/Marshfield town line to the VT 15 intersection in West Danville. Motorists should expect a gravel road surface when traveling on U.S. 2 near Joe’s Pond in West Danville. Flaggers and uniform traffic officers will assist motorists through the work zone.   

Montpelier – Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic with flaggers in place to assist motorists on U.S. 2 beginning near Bailey Avenue and continuing on U.S. 2 to the U.S. 2 and U.S. 302 roundabout. 

Montpelier – Work continues on Memorial Drive from the I-89 Exit 8 interchange to the intersection with U.S. 2 and on Dog River Road for the length of the state highway. Daytime lane closures will be present for pavement marking operations. Motorists should watch for shifting traffic patterns and wet paint. Alternating traffic patterns facilitated by flaggers will be present on Dog River Road, and one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on Memorial Drive. 

Morristown – Motorists should expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours on VT 15 in Morristown (MM 0.319-0.339) due to a culvert installation. The work is taking place between East Main Street in Hyde Park and Needles Eye Road in Morristown. Construction will be active at the inlet and outlet of the culvert. Motorists can expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours and are advised to use caution when driving through the area.   

Northfield-Berlin – Multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic will be in place on VT 12 while a paving project continues. Expect delays. 

Pittsford – Motorists are traveling over the temporary bridge. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic control will be present to allow for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7. 

Quechee Gorge Bridge – The eastbound travel lane will be closed through fall 2024. Signal permits alternating travel over the bridge. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center. 

Richmond – Traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a single lane of alternating travel near Bridge #29 construction. Motorist can expect a gravel surface on the eastern end of the bridge site. 

Royalton – VT 14 has reopened to through traffic between Vesper Road and Meadow Lane. Motorists should expect daily lane closures with flaggers throughout the week directing alternating one-way traffic. 

Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project will require nighttime lane closures Sunday night through Friday morning between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on U.S. 4 between Gleason Road and U.S. 7, U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue, and U.S. BUS 4 between Ripley Road and U.S. 7, with intermittent width reductions to intersecting side streets. Traffic control will be present allowing alternating one-way traffic. Motorists on these routes should expect grooved and uneven roadway surfaces with raised surface structures.   

Woodstock – A culvert replacement project is ongoing on U.S. 4 near Valley View Road. U.S. 4 is open to traffic with a dip in the roadway and no pavement where the new culvert is located. One lane of alternating traffic is expected Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with flaggers. After work hours, the roadway will be open to two lanes of traffic.    

Worcester – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic maintained by traffic signals over the temporary bridge on VT 12 over the North Branch of the Winooski River. The speed limit over the temporary bridge has been reduced to 25 mph. The posted speed limit entering and exiting the work zone is 40 mph.
