Register at redcross.org/EndHomeFiresNNE for a home fire safety visit on May 4 from Red Cross and local fire departments
Vermont Business Magazine The American Red Cross Northern New England Region is offering free smoke alarm installations for Washington County residents during a Sound the Alarm home fire safety event on Saturday, May 4, 2024. We are proudly partnering with the Berlin, Barre, Warren and Montpelier Fire Departments as well as the Vermont Division of Fire Safety to bring more smoke alarms to more Vermont homes.
Home fires claim seven lives every day in the United States, but having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half. Here in Vermont, the Red Cross responds to more than 100 home fires every year.
“A working smoke alarm can be the difference between survival and tragedy when a home fire strikes,” said Executive Director Sarah Lemnah, Red Cross Vermont Chapter. “That’s why the Red Cross is teaming up with several Washington County fire departments to help ensure Vermont residents, especially those most vulnerable, have access to these lifesaving devices.”
Washington County residents can register at here for a 30-minute home fire safety visit on May 4. In addition to installing free smoke alarms, trained Red Cross volunteers and firefighters will share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.
VERMONT EVENT PART OF NATIONAL CAMPAIGN Local Sound the Alarm events like this one in Washington County are a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 2,063 lives since launching in October 2014. Locally during this time, the Red Cross of Northern New England and local partners have installed 7,400 free smoke alarms, serving more than 5,900 people and making more than 2,390 households safer in Vermont.
Vermont residents outside of Washington County, can also visit redcross.org/EndHomesFiresNNE or call 1-800-464-6692 (Option 4) to schedule a free installation. A member of our Red Cross team will follow-up to schedule your appointment.
This work is made possible thanks to generous financial donations from regional partners including: Vermont Mutual Insurance, Co-Op Insurance Companies, State Farm and Northeast Delta Dental. You can also help by donating to the Red Cross to help people prepare for, respond to and recover from home fires.
