Welch: A government shut down is a big deal

There’s a small group in the House that has this notion that it is no big deal if we literally shut down government. Well, it’s a big deal for folks in Vermont

Vermont Business Magazine Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont) spoke on the Senate floor Thursday about the consequences of a shutdown – large and small – for Vermont families and communities. He urged the House to pass the Senate’s bipartisan Continuing Resolution, which includes $6 billion in disaster aid to replenish FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund, a critical resource for victims of natural disasters like the floods experienced in Vermont this summer.

Senator Welch’s remarks followed Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii, who spoke on the urgent need to support Maui disaster victims and keep the government funded.

“There’s a small group in the House that has this notion that it is no big deal if we literally shut down government. Well, it’s a big deal for those folks in Vermont who need FEMA relief. It’s a big deal for those men and women who serve in the United States military services when they won’t get paid...,” said Welch.
