Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of September 18, 2023. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates
I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorists can expect lane closures Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with uneven lanes and a grooved surface on the on- and off-ramps. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-89 Richmond – The southbound and northbound high-speed lanes will be closed Monday through Friday, from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The right shoulder in both the northbound and southbound lanes remain closed within project limits.
I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.
I-91 Barton-Derby – A paving project is finishing up from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby. Single-lane closures will be in place in both directions Monday through Friday, with a speed limit reduction to 55 mph.
I-91 Bradford – Permanent, single-lane closures have been established in both directions near Exit 16 while crews work on maintenance repairs to multiple bridges. A full stop configuration has been implemented for traffic entering I-91 northbound from Exit 16. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones. The westbound shoulder of VT 25B/South Main Street under the work zone is closed.
I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Permanent, single-lane closures have been implemented for multiple bridge maintenance work zones in Newbury on I-91 northbound near Exit 17 and southbound between Exits 16 and 17, and in the southbound lanes in St. Johnsbury near Exit 20. The Exit 20 southbound on-ramp remains closed with a signed detour in place. In Fairlee, a full deck replacement over Lake Morey Road has necessitated a temporary crossover for northbound traffic at Exit 15. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.
I-91 Lyndon-Barton – Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures northbound and southbound in the work zones between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Saturday, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over Vermont Route 121 is underway. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. An alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated with temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges.
I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 North between Westminster and Springfield. Motorists can expect lane closures between Exit 5 and Exit 8.
Around the State
Barre City – A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Motorists can expect short to moderate delays on VT 14/Maple Avenue with a single-lane closure and alternating one-way traffic.
Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway in Barre Town for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. Motorists should anticipate occasional lane closures and large trucks entering and exiting the project area.
Bennington-Pownal – VT 279 will have lane closures for bridge repairs. Crews will also be adding gravel to shoulders and performing cleanup tasks causing slight delays for motorists. Drivers can expect flaggers and one-way alternating traffic through the work zones.
Berlin – A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Motorists can expect intermittent short stoppages on either side of the bridge allowing construction vehicles to safely move through the work zone. Speed advisory signs of 25 mph are in place for the traffic lane shift.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 has reopened, but project cleanup and stabilization work for the new bridge over the Connecticut River on VT/NH 119 continues. Motorists should anticipate delays and alternating traffic patterns until the bridge project is completed.
Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect moderate delays and several control packages with alternating one-way traffic between Brattleboro and Newfane. Drivers are advised to follow the posted speed limit of 40 mph throughout the project limits.
Burlington – A roadway project continues along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. 2), and Alternate U.S. 7 (North/South Winooski Avenue, St. Paul Street) to the intersection with Riverside Avenue. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Parking restrictions and flagged traffic may be required at various locations.
Charlotte-South Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Flagged and alternating traffic will be required in the vicinity of active operations.
Chester – A culvert replacement project continues along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Crews are expected to begin paving this week. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals.
Colchester – A roadway improvement project along the U.S. 2/7 corridor at I-89 Exit 16 will cause lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between Mountain View Drive and South Park Drive between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Work will take place under the closure of the outermost northbound and southbound travel lanes along U.S. 2/7.
Essex Junction – Crews will be installing granite curb this week in the Five Corners area. Drivers may encounter delays on Park Street and Main Street as equipment and materials are moving around the worksite. Railroad Street will be closed to through-traffic while curb is being installed.
Hartford – The replacement of the VA Cut-Off bridge continues. Motorists can expect minimal traffic impacts as crews continue to form pier cap one and column two for the new bridge.
Hartland – The Hartland 3 Corners intersection reconfiguration project continues with crews completing landscaping and paving activities this week. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S.5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection.
Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River remains closed, with traffic continuing to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its intersection with U.S. 4. Motorists should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge.
A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road. The phase two detour is open, with traffic shifting to the north side of U.S. 4. Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed as the phase two detour is narrow with added curvature to its alignment. Motorists should expect intermittent short stoppages within the work zone.
Ludlow – A bridge replacement project is underway along VT 100, 3.4 miles north of the intersection with VT 103. Motorists can expect minor delays with alternating one-lane traffic managed by flaggers. Travelers should watch for construction vehicles entering the roadway throughout the week.
Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect multiple traffic control packages with lane closures and alternating one-way traffic in Marshfield. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway have a gravel surface with no markings to indicate the centerline and edge line.
Montpelier – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 302 from the project limits at the Berlin/Montpelier town line to the intersection with U.S. 2 at the roundabout, and along U.S. 2 throughout the entire length of the project, beginning at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line and continuing on U.S. 2 to the eastern end of the project limits, near the Berlin/Montpelier town line.
New Haven – Traffic on VT 17 near East Street and Sawyer Road will have one-way alternating traffic in place during paving operations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
North Hero – A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and motorists should expect brief delays with stopped traffic at times throughout the week. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place.
Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 100 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. A speed limit reduction to 40 mph is in effect with an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals. Motorists can expect minor delays through the work zone.
Poultney – A bridge replacement project is ongoing at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where the yield to alternating traffic pattern remains in place. Flaggers will be assisting traffic through the work zone while crews perform drainage work near the intersection. Construction traffic to the north abutment will continue.
Quechee – A major rehabilitation of the Quechee Gorge Bridge continues. Motorists can expect lane closures with flaggers between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the week. The hiking trail under the bridge is fully closed until November 2025. Hikers will need to exit the trail at the bridge underpass and use the visitor center trail to bypass the construction zone.
Richmond-Bolton – A roadway resurfacing project continues along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect delays and one-way alternating traffic, Monday through Friday, for both daytime and nighttime work operations.
Royalton – Construction for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment is paused until October 2023. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals. Motorists should be aware of the 12’1” overpass clearance.
Stowe-Cambridge – An environmental restoration/parking area and stormwater improvement project is underway along Scenic VT 108 “The Notch” between Stowe and Cambridge. Work will take place predominately off the roadway, but motorists may encounter periods of one-way alternating traffic between the Big Spring and Notch Proper South Parking Areas. NOTE: Tractor trailers are prohibited from “The Notch” road.
Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. While the bridge is closed for construction, there are two signed detour routes in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.
West Fairlee-Thetford – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 113 near the West Fairlee-Thetford town line. Motorists can expect a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers.
Williston – The reconstruction of the intersection of U.S. 2 and Industrial Avenue continues this week. Motorists can expect short delays with flaggers assisting equipment through the project area, Monday through Friday, between 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Crews will also be working nighttime hours Monday through Wednesday, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Drivers during this time should anticipate lane closures with traffic control.
Williston Park and Ride – The construction of a new Park and Ride facility along VT 2A continues. Motorists can expect delays and one-way alternating traffic between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. throughout the week.
Winooski – A roadway project resumes along East Allen Street/VT 15. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Drivers can expect delays near the Winooski Bridge.
