Vermont Business Magazine Summer 2023 saw some of the most extreme weather ever in the Northern Hemisphere’s history – a byproduct of climate change caused by humans’ use of fossil fuels and the resulting emissions, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

Current society makes huge demands on energy production and distribution, and creating this energy has had a major cost. Our environment has often borne the brunt of that impact. But, could there be a way to produce energy without wreaking havoc on our Earth and destabilizing its climate too?

It’s an important question that Saint Michael’s Physics Professor Alain Brizard hopes to help answer during a presentation on Oct. 24 titled, “Is there a clean-energy path to a stable climate future?”

The presentation is part of an ongoing series of academic and research seminars during which Saint Michael’s faculty address some of the most important problems that exist in the world today.  Dr. Brizard has been one of the world’s leading theorists in fusion plasma research and its potential role in developing clean energy for almost four decades.

Dr. Brizard plans to present on the major forms of energy used in our modern society (derived from fossil and nuclear fuels, as well as derived directly and indirectly from the Sun), and discuss their impacts on the environment as well as their potential roles in stabilizing or destabilizing Earth’s climate.

The event on Oct. 24 is free and open to the public.
