AOT road construction report for the week of October 16

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of October 16, 2023. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.      

Interstates   

I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorists can expect lane closures Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with uneven lanes and a grooved surface on the on- and off-ramps. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.    

I-89 Richmond – Motorists may encounter a single-lane closure for both southbound and northbound travel, between Monday and Friday, from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The right shoulder in both the northbound and southbound lanes remain closed within project limits.  

I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed limit reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.   

I-91 Bradford – Permanent, single-lane closures have been established on I-91 in both directions near Exit 16 while crews work on maintenance repairs to multiple bridges. A full stop configuration has been implemented for traffic entering I-91 northbound from Exit 16. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones. The westbound shoulder of VT 

25B/South Main Street under the work zone is closed. 

I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Permanent, single-lane closures have been implemented for multiple bridge maintenance work zones in Newbury on I-91 northbound near Exit 17 and southbound between Exits 16 and 17, and in the southbound lanes in St. Johnsbury near Exit 20. The Exit 20 southbound on-ramp remains closed with a signed detour in place. In Fairlee, a full deck replacement over Lake Morey Road has necessitated a temporary crossover for northbound traffic at Exit 15. Lane width restrictions and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones. 

I-91 Lyndon-Barton – Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures northbound and southbound between Exits 23 and 25, and adjacent to Exit 25, from Monday to Saturday, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones.  

I-91 Westminster A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over VT 121 is underway. A crossover is in effect with a speed limit reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. An alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated with temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges.   

I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 North between Westminster and Springfield. Motorists can expect minimal traffic impacts throughout the project limits between Exit 5 and Exit 8.   

Around the State    

Barre City A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Motorists can expect a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic at the VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street intersection, and on Merchant Street between VT 14/Maple Avenue and Warren Street.     

Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway in Barre Town for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. Motorists can expect minimal traffic impacts this week throughout the work area.  

Bennington-Pownal Motorists may encounter lane closures with minor delays this week while crews complete bridge joint repairs and painting work on VT 279. Crews will also be adding gravel to shoulders along U.S. 7 from Bennington to the Massachusetts border. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and to avoid driving over wet paint.  

Berlin A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Motorists can expect intermittent short stoppages on either side of the bridge to allow for construction vehicles to safely move through the work zone. 

 Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 has reopened, but project cleanup, stabilization, and ongoing approach work for the new bridge over the Connecticut River on VT/NH 119 continues. Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution and may encounter minor delays in the work area until the completion of the bridge project.

Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect several traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists can anticipate delays and are advised to follow the posted speed limit which has been reduced to 40 mph throughout the project area.   

Burlington  A roadway project along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. Highway 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. 2), and Alternate U.S. 7 (North/South Winooski Avenue, St. Paul Street) to the intersection with Riverside Avenue is nearing completion. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Overnight parking restrictions and lane closures will be required at various locations in the work area. 

Charlotte-South Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Lane closures may be required in the vicinity of active operations. 

Colchester – A roadway improvement project along the U.S. 2/7 corridor at I-89 Exit 16 is underway. Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures of the outermost northbound and southbound lanes along U.S. 2/7 between Mountain View Drive and South Park Drive, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. No more than one travel lane will be closed in each direction during active construction operations. 

Essex Junction Crews will be installing waterlines and storm drainage lines along the new roadway in the vicinity of Maple Street. Crews will also be working on completing sidewalk and concrete infill in various parts of the project. Brief traffic delays may occur as crews move equipment and materials through the project area. Railroad Street will remain closed to through-traffic this week.  

Hartford – Motorists can expect minor traffic disruptions along VT 14 as crews receive large deliveries of steel for an ongoing bridge replacement project. 

Hartland The Hartland 3 Corners intersection project continues this week with crews completing final pavement markings and traffic sign installations. Motorists may encounter slight delays and are advised to slow down and remain alert when traveling through the work area.  

Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 east of the Skyeship Gondola. Motorists will continue to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Motorists can expect single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. Drivers should be aware that sections of the roadway within the work zone will be gravel surfaces. 

A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road. Traffic will continue to be shifted to the south side of U.S. 4 within the project limits. Motorists can expect single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. Portions of U.S. 4 will consist of a gravel or scarified pavement surface. Drivers, especially motorcyclists, are encouraged to use caution and slow down while traveling through the work area.      

Ludlow – A bridge replacement project is underway along VT 100, 3.4 miles north of the intersection with VT 103. Motorists can expect one-way alternating traffic managed by flaggers between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.   

Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect multiple traffic control packages with lane closures and alternating one-way traffic in Marshfield.  

Montpelier A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., beginning at the Middlesex-Montpelier town line at State Street, and continuing along U.S. 2 to the eastern end of the project limits at the Berlin-Montpelier town line. Motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic throughout the project limits between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. this week.  

New Haven – Work continues on VT 17 near East Street and Sawyer Road. Motorists can expect periods of alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.   

North Hero – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and motorists should expect brief delays with stopped traffic at times throughout the week. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place. 

Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project continues along VT 100, 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. Motorists should remain alert for lane closures and minor traffic delays as the project nears completion. 

Poultney  A bridge replacement project is ongoing at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where the yield to alternating traffic pattern remains in place. Drainage work will obstruct the intersection and flaggers will be assisting traffic through the work zone. Construction traffic to the north abutment will continue.   

Quechee A major rehabilitation of the Quechee Gorge Bridge continues. The trail under the bridge will remain closed year-round until November 2025. Hikers will need to exit the trail at the bridge underpass and use the visitor center trail to bypass the construction zone.       

Richmond – The replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89 continues this week. Drivers may encounter periodic lane closures with traffic control present to allow for one lane of alternating travel.  

Richmond-Bolton – A roadway resurfacing project continues along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect moderate delays with traffic control present to allow for one-lane of alternating traffic within various work areas during daytime and nighttime hours throughout the week.  

Royalton – Construction for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment is paused until late October 2023. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals. Motorists should be aware of the 12’1” overpass clearance.         

Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. While the bridge is closed for construction, there are two signed detour routes in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.  

Williston – The reconstruction of the intersection of U.S. 2 and Industrial Avenue continues this week. Motorists may encounter lane shifts and minor delays within the various work areas during daytime work hours.  

Wilmington-Brattleboro – Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic along VT 9 as crews complete culvert flushing. Flaggers will be in place to assist motorists through the work zone.   

Winooski A roadway project continues along East Allen Street/VT 15. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Work on the railroad crossing located on VT 15 near Spring Street continues. Motorists should expect delays and lane closures with flagged traffic in the work zone. Overnight temporary parking restrictions will be in effect within the project area at various locations throughout the week.
