Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of July 17, 2023. Some projects are not included in the report this week as they have been temporarily suspended due to flood damage, inaccessibility to the work site, or contractors repositioned to assist AOT with emergency response work. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Canada
I-89 Highgate Springs –Route 133 on the Canadian side of the border is now full reopened to all traffic.
Interstates
I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorist can expect lane closures Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a grooved traveling surface with uneven lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from MM 36.60 to Exit 8.
I-89 Richmond – Travelers should expect shoulder closures southbound as crews work on a bridge replacement project on U.S. 2 over the interstate along with daily temporary northbound passing lane closures.
I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.
I-91 Barton-Derby – Daily, single lane closures in both directions on I-91 from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby are scheduled for multiple work zones, Monday through Saturday. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in effect. Night paving of Orleans Exit 26 is weather dependent and scheduled to take place over the course of two overnight shifts this week. As a result, the interchange will be closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and signed detours will be in place to/from Exit 25 along U.S. 5.
I-91 Bradford – Permanent, single lane closures remain in place in both directions just north of Exit 16 where preventative maintenance repairs to multiple bridges are ongoing. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones. Lane shifts with traffic cones on VT 25B/ South Main Street will be implemented to allow traffic to safely flow in both directions under the work zone.
I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Preventative maintenance repairs to bridges require multiple permanent work zones along I-91 in both directions near Exit 17 in Newbury and in the southbound lanes near Exit 20 in St. Johnsbury. In addition, the St. Johnsbury Exit 20 I-91 southbound on ramp has been closed and a signed detour is in place. A temporary crossover for northbound traffic has been implemented at Exit 15 in Fairlee as they work to complete a full deck replacement on the northbound bridge over Lake Morey Road. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.
I-91 Lyndon – Barton –Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures (both NB and SB) in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Friday during daytime construction hours (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project over Vermont Route 121 is underway. Interstate 91 northbound and southbound have been reduced to one lane of travel across the bridges, and an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated with temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges. A speed reduction to 55 mph is in place within the project area on I-91. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone.
Around the State
Barre City – A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Motorists can expect short to moderate delays on VT 14/Maple Avenue with a single lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone and temporary traffic signals may be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone during nighttime hours.
Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway in Barre Town for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. Bridge #21 and VT 110 between Old Route 302 and the Waterman/Websterville intersection remains closed to traffic.
Bennington-Pownal – Multiple operations will be carried out along VT-279, including repairs to drainage structures and crack sealing to the east, while a paving crew will work on VT-279 eastbound. Drivers should anticipate flaggers, lane closures, and delays. A separate crew will focus on shoulders, ditching, guardrails, and milling along U.S.-7, leading to lane closures and alternating traffic.
Berlin – A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Motorists should expect a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic along U.S. 302. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Bradford – Lane shifts with traffic cones on VT 25B/South Main Street will be implemented to allow traffic to safely flow in both directions under the active work zones for I-91 bridges.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 remains closed from the intersection with Royal Road to 28 Vernon Street for roadway approach work for a bridge project. Separate signed detours for cars and trucks remain active. Flaggers will be stationed at either end of the project as needed to assist local traffic and construction equipment in and out of the work zone.
Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect moderate delays and two traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic on VT 30 between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists should exercise caution driving through the project limits as there are varying roadway surfaces, including gravel. Speed limits throughout the project area have been reduced to 40 mph. Motorists should anticipate adverse road conditions during/after rainfall and should expect the presence of grading equipment on the road following storm events.
Burlington – A roadway project continues along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. Route 2), and Alternate U.S. 7 (North/South Winooski Ave, St. Paul St.) to the intersection with Riverside Ave. Nighttime work hours are 7:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Expect delays in the vicinity of active operations. Parking restrictions will be in effect at various times. Please observe all posted parking restrictions.
Charlotte-So. Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Flagged, alternating traffic will be required in the vicinity of active operations. Delays may occur, particularly in the evening hours.
Chester – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals.
Colchester – Construction continues on the Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange located along U.S 2/7. During daytime hours, motorists should expect single-lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. with up to one travel lane closed in a single direction. During nighttime hours, motorists should expect lane closures between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. along U.S. 2/7 with at least one travel lane remaining open in each direction.
Essex Junction – For the Crescent Connector project, Railroad Street remains closed to through traffic; local traffic will have access to the street. There will be some traffic impacts on Maple Street and Main Street. Parking is available on Ivy Lane and behind the Firebird Café. On Park Street, pedestrians should use the sidewalk on the west side of the street between the railroad crossings unless going to a business at 34 Park Street. All businesses at 34 Park are open. For off-street parking for businesses at 34 Park Street, enter the driveway at the south end of the building and follow the signs.
Hartford – A bridge replacement project is underway in Hartford on Bridge #7 on the VA Cutoff Road. A 60-day planned closure of VT 14 between Ferry Crossing Road and Christian Street is now in place. A signed detour is in place along the VA Cut Off Road, Mill Road, U.S. 4/5, and VT 14. Bike and pedestrian access is being maintained on VT 14.
Hartland – The Hartland 3 Corners intersection reconfiguration project continues. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S. 5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection for conduit installation north on US5 throughout the week.
Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 just east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River will remain closed and traffic will continue to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its eastern intersection with U.S. 4. Motorist should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge.
A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road just east of West Hill Road. The phase one detour is open, and traffic will continue to be shifted to the south side of U.S. 4, opposite side of Spring Hill Road. The phase one detour is narrow with added curvature to its alignment. Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed throughout the work zone and follow all signed speed limits.
Lyndon-Burke – A series of culvert replacements is wrapping up along U.S. 5 between Lyndon and Burke. Expect to encounter alternating one-way traffic with short delays along U.S. 5 Monday through Wednesday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. between the VT 122/VT 114/U.S. 5 intersection continuing north to West Burke Village. The project is scheduled to be completed next week.
Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 in Marshfield. Motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 between Marshfield and Plainfield. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway are scarified and have a gravel surface with no markings indicating the centerline and edge line. Motorists can expect to see hazards marked with cones and barrels along the edges of the roadway.
Montpelier – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Beginning Tuesday, July 18, through Friday, July 21, during nighttime hours, between 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., motorists will see lane closures and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 302 from the project limits at the Berlin/Montpelier town line to the intersection with U.S. 2 at the roundabout, and along U.S. 2 beginning at the eastern end of the project and continuing along U.S. 2 to the roundabout.
Morgan – A culvert replacement project is underway on Vermont Route 111 southeast of Seymour Lake. VT 111 is closed between Bear Mountain Road and Whitehill Loop Road. The road will remain closed at this location until mid-August. Local detour routes are in effect. Minor delays may occur.
New Haven – Traffic will continue to be redirected from VT 17 to the diversion road near East Street and Sawyer Road. Flaggers will be there to help construction vehicles in and out of the work zone, but otherwise two-way traffic will be maintained on the diversion road.
North Hero – A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero Island and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and will be in place throughout the summer and fall. In addition to signals, vehicular traffic through the bridge site should expect periods of stopped traffic throughout the week. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place. Delays should be anticipated.
Poultney – A bridge replacement project is ongoing at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where a yield to one-way alternating traffic pattern remains in place through the work zone. Local traffic should be advised that truss components and cranes are being mobilized to both abutments and steel has been re-scheduled to be placed as soon as Tuesday.
Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 100 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. A speed limit reduction to 40 mph is in effect with an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals. Motorists can expect minor delays through the work zone. NOTE: VT 100 is closed between U.S. Route 4 and VT 100A. A detour is in place using VT 100A.
Quechee – The Quechee Gorge Bridge project is expected to begin this month. The traffic control plan will likely require U.S. 4 to be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic.
Richmond – Replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89. Travelers can expect lane closures with traffic control present allowing for one lane of alternating travel.
Richmond-Bolton – Rehabilitation of U.S. 2 continues. Motorists can expect delays within work areas due to one-way alternating traffic, Monday through Friday 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Motorists can also expect to be traveling on some areas of gravel surface between Millet Street and the I-89 interchange. Please slow down.
Royalton – Construction efforts for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment continue. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Please be aware of the 12’-1” overpass clearance and follow signage.
Stowe – The contractor will be on-site closing out their work. There are no significant traffic delays expected.
Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. The bridge is closed for construction. Two signed detour routes are in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.
Williston - Expect a long-term lane shift on U.S. 2 between Gregory Drive, So. Burlington and Adams Court, Williston. Flaggers will be present allowing for construction vehicles in/out of the work areas with minimal impact to motorists. Temporary lane shifts will be in place on Industrial Avenue for paving.
Williston Park and Ride – Construction of a new park and ride facility along Vermont Route 2A continues. One-way alternating traffic will be required on VT 2A between 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Please use caution when traveling through the project area. Expect delays.
Wilmington-Brattleboro – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 9. Motorists can expect moderate traffic delays and alternating one-way traffic in Marlboro as crews continue line striping and paving sideroads and driveway aprons along VT 9. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
