Restoring VYCC's East Monitor Barn
Monday, July 10, 7:00-8:00 PM
Over the next two years, the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps will be restoring the second of their two "Monitor Barns"-- beautiful and historic structures located at their campus on Route 2 in Richmond. To do so, they have partnered with Building Heritage of Huntington, Vermont to turn the restoration into a community timber framing project. VYCC has worked with a private landowner and with Ethan Tapper, the Chittenden County Forester, to source the timbers needed for the project locally, including from a forest management project managed by Ethan at the Westford Town Lands. Learn more about the restoration of the East Monitor Barn here: https://eastmonitorbarn.org/
In this in-person presentation on the VYCC campus, Ethan will discuss how forests work, what responsible forest management looks like, and how forest management can be a source of beautiful, renewable resources, harvested while protecting and enriching forests.
The presentation will take place at 7:00 PM in the haymow at VYCC's West Monitor Barn, located at 1949 East Main Street (US Route 2), Richmond.
Communicating Forestry: Ways That Work
Tuesday, July 11, 7:00 - 8:30 PM
Join Ethan Tapper, the Chittenden County Forester for the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, and the Forest Stewards Guild, for the first webinar in the FSG's a Communicating Forestry series.
Part of putting innovation into practice is knowing what’s important to share about our vision, and then how and when to do so. As forest managers and stewards, we manage forests for a variety of different objectives, values and purposes, but the importance of our work is not always clear to everyone. Forestry is nuanced, complex and counter-intuitive to many. Our ability to clearly and effectively communicate the work that we do is integral to our ability to continue to do what is necessary to take care of our forests.
In this presentation, Ethan will discuss how we can demonstrate the value of forest management in ways that are engaging and exciting, including modifying our language, mobilizing partnerships, and approaching outreach in novel ways.
