Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways throughout Vermont for the week of July 3. Most crews will not be working on Monday and Tuesday for the holiday. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Canada
I-89 Highgate Springs – Travelers to Quebec are advised that Route 133 on the Canadian side of the border is closed between Champlain Road in Saint-Armand and Morgan Road in Pike River until approximately 07/15 for construction of an overpass. A local detour route is in place for motorists that need to travel to/through communities on the Route 133 route. Oversize and overweight vehicles may NOT use the detour and are strongly advised to seek alternate routes, use other points of entry, and avoid restricted routes.
Interstates
I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.
I-91 Barton-Derby – No traffic impacts are scheduled until Wednesday, July 5th at 6 a.m. in observance of the Independence Day Holiday. Daily, single lane closures in both directions on I-91 from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby are scheduled for multiple work zones after the holiday period and on Saturday, July 8th. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in effect through these work zones. Work at Orleans Exit 26 on and off ramps will result in the use of flaggers and uniformed traffic officers to direct vehicles through the interchange and motorists should use caution and watch for milled and uneven surfaces in this area.
I-91 Bradford – Preventative maintenance repairs to multiple bridges north of Exit 16 are ongoing. Permanent, single lane closures are in place in both directions with a speed limit reduction to 55 mph.
I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorist can expect lane closures Wednesday through Saturday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a grooved traveling surface with uneven lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from MM 36.60 to Exit 8.
I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Preventative maintenance repairs to bridges require multiple permanent work zones along I-91 in both directions near Exit 17 in Newbury and in the southbound lanes near Exit 20 in St. Johnsbury. In addition, the St. Johnsbury Exit 20 I-91 southbound on ramp has been closed and a signed detour is in place. A temporary crossover for northbound traffic has been implemented at Exit 15 in Fairlee as they work to complete a full deck replacement on the northbound bridge over Lake Morey Road. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.
I-91 Lyndon – Barton –Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures (both NB and SB) in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25 from Wednesday to Saturday during daytime construction hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). There will be no work Monday and Tuesday in recognition of the holiday. Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-89 Richmond – Travelers should expect shoulder closures southbound as crews work on a bridge replacement project on U.S. 2 over the interstate along with a potential northbound passing lane closure. A traffic alert will be provided if this is implemented.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project over Vermont Route 121 is underway. Interstate 91 northbound and southbound have been reduced to one lane of travel across the bridges, and an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated with temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges. A speed reduction to 55 mph is in place within the project area on I-91. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone.
I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 northbound between Westminster and Springfield. Motorists can expect lane closures on I-91 N between Exit 5 and Exit 8.
Around the State
Barre City – A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Motorists can expect short to moderate delays on VT 14/Maple Avenue with a single lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone and temporary traffic signals may be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone during nighttime hours.
Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway in Barre Town for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. Friday, June 30, at 6:30 a.m., VT 110 between Old Route 302 and the Waterman/Websterville intersection will be closed to traffic. Bridge #21 on VT 110 over Jail Branch is closed to all traffic. A signed 6.3-mile detour route is in place for motorists. Saturday July 1, through Saturday July 8, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., motorists can expect a single-lane closure to be in place at the VT 110 and US 302 portion of the roundabout.
Bennington-Pownal – Work will include drainage structure repair, line striping, crack sealing, milling, and paving along VT-279. Drivers should expect flaggers, lane closures, and delays. On US-7, work will continue on the shoulders, ditches, and guardrails between Bennington village and the Massachusetts/Vermont border. A lane closure with alternating traffic will be in effect.
Berlin – A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Motorists can expect minimal traffic impacts along U.S. 302.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 remains closed from the intersection with Royal Road to 28 Vermon Street for roadway approach work for a bridge project. The detour route from VT 142 is up Cotton Mill Hill Road where separate signed detours are in place for cars and trucks. A turnaround and three-way stop configuration have been implemented on VT 142 near Cotton Mill Hill Road and motorists should watch for turning vehicles and reduce speed in this area.
Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect moderate delays and multiple traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic on VT 30 between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists should exercise caution driving through the project limits as there are varying roadway surfaces, including gravel. Speed limits throughout the project area have been reduced to 40 mph.
Burlington – A roadway project continues along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. Route 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. Route 2), and Alternate U.S. Route 7 (North/South Winooski Ave, St. Paul St.) to the intersection with Riverside Ave. Night time work hours are 7:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Expect delays in the vicinity of active operations. Parking restrictions will be in effect at various times. Please observe all posted parking restrictions.
Burlington – Construction continues on the Shelburne Street Roundabout located at the intersection of U.S. 7 (Shelburne Street, South Willard Street), ALT. U.S. 7 (Shelburne Street), Locust Street and Ledge Road. Motorists should expect minimal traffic impacts throughout the week between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Charlotte-So. Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. Route 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Night time work hours are 7:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Flagged, alternating traffic will be required in the vicinity of active operations. Delays may occur, particularly in the evening hours.
Chester – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers and temporary signals.
Colchester – Construction continues on the Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange located along U.S 2/7. During daytime hours, motorists should expect single-lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. with up to one travel lane will be closed in a single direction. During nighttime hours, motorists should expect lane closures between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. along U.S. 2/7 with at least one travel lane remaining open in each direction.
Essex Junction – Work on the second phase of the Crescent Connector project is underway. Railroad Street will continue to be closed to through traffic, and there will be some traffic impacts on Maple Street as equipment and trucks cross from the staging area to Railroad Street. Pedestrians should use the sidewalk on the west side of Park Street unless going to a business at 34 Park Street.
Hartford – A bridge replacement project is underway in Hartford on Bridge #7 on the VA Cutoff Road. A 60-day planned closure of VT 14 between Ferry Crossing Road and Christian Street begins on July 5. A signed detour will be in place along the VA Cut Off Road, Mill Road, U.S. 4/5, and VT 14. Bike and pedestrian access will be maintained on VT 14.
Hartford Quechee Gorge Bridge – AOT selected a contractor for the Quechee Gorge Bridge Project, NH 020-2(45). Work is expected to begin this summer. Some construction staging is expecting in the coming weeks. The project team is planning a public meeting to provide information on the short- and long-term construction schedule and general traffic impacts. The public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 13, 2023, 6:00 - 7:30 PM, Hartford Town Hall, 171 Bridge Street, White River Junction, VT. This information session can be attended either in-person or virtually. Details on virtual login information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Hartland – The Hartland 3 Corners intersection reconfiguration project continues. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S. 5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection for conduit installation throughout the week.
Hinesburg – Crews are constructing a new sidewalk on VT 116 from the Hinesburg Community School to a new development beyond Friendship Lane. Travelers may encounter intermittent periods of alternating one-way traffic when dump trucks and other equipment are needed onsite.
Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 just east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River will remain closed and traffic will continue to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its eastern intersection with U.S. 4. Motorist should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge.
A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road just east of West Hill Road. The phase one detour is open, and traffic will continue to be shifted to the south side of U.S. 4, opposite side of Spring Hill Road. The phase one detour is narrow with added curvature to its alignment. Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed throughout the work zone and follow all signed speed limits.
Lyndon-Burke – A series of culvert replacements is underway along U.S. 5 between Lyndon and Burke. Expect to encounter alternating one-way traffic with short delays along U.S. 5 weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. between the VT 122/VT 114/U.S. 5 intersection continuing north to West Burke Village.
Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 between Plainfield and Marshfield. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway are scarified and have a gravel surface with no markings indicating the centerline and edge line.
Montpelier – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic from Bailey Avenue to the start of the project limits at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line and at the Memorial Drive and Bailey Avenue intersection. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Morgan – A culvert replacement project is underway on VT Route 111 southeast of Seymour Lake. Route 111 is closed between Bear Mountain Road and Whitehill Loop Road. The road will remain closed at this location until mid to late August. Local detour routes are in effect. Minor delays may occur.
New Haven – Traffic will continue to be redirected from VT-17 to the diversion road near East Street and Sawyer Road. Flaggers will be there to help construction vehicles in and out of the work zone, but otherwise two-way traffic will be maintained on the diversion road.
North Hero – A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. Route 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero Island and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and will be in place throughout the summer and fall. In addition to signals, vehicular traffic through the bridge site should expect periods of stopped traffic throughout the week. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place. Minor delays should be anticipated.
Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 100 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. A speed limit reduction to 40 mph is in effect with an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals. Motorists can expect minor delays through the work zone.
Poultney – A bridge replacement project is ongoing at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where a yield to one-way alternating traffic pattern remains in place through the work zone. Truss components will be staged for assembly at the north side of Abutment 2, and flaggers may be present in this area. Local traffic is advised to watch for trucks bringing fill material to Abutment 1.
Richmond – Replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89. Travelers can expect lane closures with traffic control present allowing for one lane of alternating travel.
Richmond-Bolton – Rehabilitation of U.S. 2 continues. Motorists can expect delays with areas of one-way alternating traffic, Wednesday and Thursday 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. between Millet Street and the I-89 interchange, and Wednesday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. between Locust Knoll Road and Lemroy Court. Motorists can also expect to be traveling on some areas of gravel surface between Millet Street and Riverview Cemetery. Please slow down.
Royalton – Construction efforts for the VT Route 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment in Royalton are continuing. Currently traffic is reduced to one lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. There is a low clearance of 12-1” at the railroad overpass that truck drivers need to be aware of.
Stockbridge-Bethel – Motorists can expect single-lane closures on VT 107 in the Bethel area Wednesday through Friday as bridge joints are scheduled to be installed.
Stowe – For the Stowe Route 100/West Hill Road Intersection work, there are a few items for the contractor to do to complete work and finish up at the construction site. No significant delays are expected for traffic.
Stowe-Cambridge – A parking and picnic area improvement project is underway along Scenic VT 108 “The Notch” between Stowe and Cambridge. Motorists may encounter periods of one-way alternating traffic on this route as crews work on different sites throughout the Notch. Remember, no tractor trailers allowed.
Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. The bridge is closed for construction. Two signed detour routes are in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.
Waterbury – Beginning on 7/5, crews are scheduled to set granite curb and prep for new sidewalk. This will result in some sidewalk closures on the north side of Main Street and some alternating one-way traffic using flaggers.
Williston - Expect a long-term lane shift on U.S. 2 between Gregory Drive, So. Burlington and Adams Court, Williston. Flaggers will be present allowing for construction vehicles in/out of the work areas with minimal impact to motorists. Temporary lane shifts will be in place on Industrial Avenue for paving.
Williston Park and Ride – Construction of a new park and ride facility along Vermont Route 2A continues. One-way alternating traffic will be required on VT 2A between 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Please use caution when traveling through the project area. Expect delays.
Wilmington-Brattleboro – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 9. Motorists can expect moderate traffic delays and alternating one-way traffic in Marlboro as crews continue line striping and paving driveway aprons along VT 9. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
