Vermont Business Magazine The new Army Mountain Warfare School complex in Jericho is welcoming their first class. Students first reported to the school on Saturday, January 14, 2023.
2023 represents the 40th anniversary of the school. The Vermont Army National Guard and instructors at the Army Mountain Warfare School are proud to welcome the first class in their new $30 million facility in Jericho. The facility took about two years to build.
“This facility is really amazing and would not have been possible without the support of Senator Leahy – my utmost respect and thanks go to him for his steadfast support,” said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Greg Knight, adjutant general, Vermont National Guard. “This new building has been a dream for many years, and we are very excited to welcome our first class to the building. I know the instructors are ready to go, and I can only imagine the thoughts of the students as they enter this state-of-the-art facility,” said Knight.
The school was established in 1983 and has been operating out of a neighboring facility in Jericho. The old building will become the armory for another Vermont Army National Guard unit.
“This new facility is really a game-changer,” said U.S. Army First Sgt. Max Rooney. “It allows us much greater capacity and capability. I’ve been here a long time, and I can’t wait to see this facility in use, and the drastic improvement in the experience of the students,” said Rooney.
The Army Mountain Warfare School is taught to U.S. Army Soldiers from the National Guard, Reserves, and active duty. International students, and students from all branches of the military also are eligible to attend the school. AMWS teaches Basic Military Mountaineer, Advanced Military Mountaineering, Rough Terrain Evacuation, Mountain Planners, and Mountain Rifleman.
There will be availability for media to capture b-roll, interview instructors, and talk with students from the first class. The school will be open to the media from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 22. The school is located at the Ethan Allen Firing in Jericho.
