Vermont Business Magazine United States Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Regional Field Office based in Harrisburg, PA, has released its field crop summary for New England. Vermont produced the most dry hay, alfalfa and maple syrup of any New England state, as production is up significantly in all three, with Maine leading the way in oat, barley and potato production.
ALL DRY HAY
Connecticut hay production is estimated at 92 thousand tons, up 3% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 1.77 tons, down 0.16 ton from the previous year. Harvested area, at 52 thousand acres is up 13% from the previous year.
Maine hay production is estimated at 271 thousand tons, up 18% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 2.02 tons per acre, up 0.11 ton from the previous year. Harvested area, at 134 thousand acres, is up 12% from the previous year.
Massachusetts hay production is estimated at 100 thousand tons, up 25% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 1.67 tons per acre, up 0.22 ton from the previous year. Harvested area, at 60 thousand acres, is up 9% from the previous year.
New Hampshire hay production is estimated at 69 thousand tons, up 11% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 1.64 tons per acre, up 0.16 ton per acre from the previous year. Harvested area, at 42 thousand acres, remains the same as the previous year.
Rhode Island hay production is estimated at 14 thousand tons, up 17% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 2.00 tons per acre, up 0.29 ton per acre from the previous year. Harvested area, at 7 thousand acres, is unchanged from the previous year.
Vermont hay production is estimated at 366 thousand tons, up 25% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 2.22 tons per acre, up 0.39 ton from the previous year. Harvested area, at 165 thousand acres, is up 3% from the previous year.
ALFALFA
Connecticut alfalfa dry hay production is estimated at 15 thousand tons, up 15% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 2.10 tons per acre, unchanged from the previous year. Harvested area, at 7 thousand acres, is up 17% from the previous year.
Maine alfalfa production is estimated at 21 thousand tons, up 5% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 2.30 tons per acre, up 0.30 ton from the previous year. Harvested area, at 9 thousand acres, is down 10% from the previous year.
Massachusetts alfalfa production is estimated at 9 thousand tons, down 10% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 1.80 tons per acre, down 0.10 ton from the previous year. Harvested area, at 5 thousand acres remains the same as the previous year.
New Hampshire alfalfa production is estimated at 10 thousand tons, up 67% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 2.00 tons per acre, up 0.80 ton from the previous year. Harvested area, at 5 thousand acres remains the same as the previous year.
Rhode Island alfalfa production is estimated at 2 thousand tons, unchanged from 2021. Yield is estimated at 2.20 tons per acre, up 0.20 from the previous year. Harvested area, at 1 thousand acres, is unchanged from the previous year.
Vermont alfalfa production is estimated at 51 thousand tons, up 59% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 3.40 tons per acre, up 1.25 ton from the previous year. Harvested area, at 15 thousand acres, is unchanged from the previous year.
MAPLE SYRUP
Maine maple syrup production is estimated at 672 thousand gallons, up 31% from 2021. Yield per tap is estimated at .341 gallon, up .079 from the previous year. The number of taps is estimated at 1.97 million, up 1% from 2021.
New Hampshire maple syrup production is estimated at 167 thousand gallons, up 31% from 2021. Yield per tap is estimated at .309 gallon, up .069 from the previous year. The number of taps is estimated at 540 thousand, up 2% from 2021.
Vermont maple syrup production is estimated at 2.55 million gallons, up 46% from 2021. Yield per tap is estimated at .383 gallon, up .114 from the previous year. The number of taps is estimated at 6.65 million, up 2% from 2021.
OAT
Maine oat production is estimated at 2.06 million bushels, up 39% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 86 bushels per acre, up 8 bushels from the previous year. Harvested area, at 24 thousand acres is up 26% from the previous year.
BARLEY
Maine barley production is estimated at 650 thousand bushels, down 21% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 65 bushels per acre, down 17 bushels from the previous year. Harvested area, at 10 thousand acres is unchanged from the previous year.
POTATO
Maine potato production is estimated at 18.1 million cwt, down 2% from 2021. Yield is estimated at 350 cwt per acre, up 5 cwt from the previous year. Harvested area, at 51.6 thousand acres, is down 3% from the previous year.
