Chittenden County Forest News, Pride Hike at the Hinesburg Town Forest

by Ethan Tapper, Chittenden County Forester Happy New Year! I'm reaching out to share an event that I have coming up at the Hinesburg Town Forest on Saturday. I have a TON of virtual and in-person events scheduled for this winter, each focusing on different aspects of forests and forest management and partnered with different organizations. Stay tuned! A list of the events I have scheduled (so far) is below.

My column for last month is about "animal personality. You can read it here.

Pride Hike: Forest Management at the Hinesburg Town Forest

Saturday, January 14, 2023 – 1:00 to 3:00pm

How can responsible forest management be part of building a more functional, beautiful, and equitable world? Join Ethan Tapper, the Chittenden County Forester, Audubon Vermont and Pride Center of Vermont for a Pride Hike at the Hinesburg Town Forest. We’ll walk an area of the HTF which is currently being managed and talk about forests, forest management, birds, and forest ecology.

Pride Hikes are a collaboration between Audubon Vermont, the Pride Center of Vermont, and Outright Vermont. Pride Hikes have been happening every month since June of 2018 and go beyond being "welcoming to everyone" to creating a safe, affirming space for LGBTQ community members. Everyone is welcome!

Trail/accessibility information:
To attend this walk, meet at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 14 at the HTF trailhead on Hayden Hill Road East, 0.3 miles from the intersection with Texas Hill Road. Please note that the Hayden Hill Road East trailhead is not accessible from Hayden Hill Road West, and that if you put “Hinesburg Town Forest” into your GPS it will send you to the incorrect trailhead.

The walk will happen “rain (snow, mud) or shine.” Folks should be ready to spend a couple hours outdoors walking over uneven and potentially slippery surfaces in whatever weather we find ourselves in, and also to spend periods of time standing and talking. Bathroom facilities are not available on site.
