Wet Snow Sunday Night into Monday

Vermont Business Magazine Green Mountain Power (GMP) is urging customers to stay alert to changing weather conditions through Monday evening, as a large and evolving storm packing significant precipitation heads towards the East Coast today. Forecasters say Vermont will see rainfall starting this afternoon, and with temperatures expected to drop late tonight, it will turn to heavy wet snow which can damage trees and lines, bringing the possibility of outages early Monday. Gusty winds are also expected. Travel conditions are expected to be extremely difficult for the Monday morning commute.
“We want customers to pay attention to changing conditions where they are, and to plan ahead for safety. We’ve been tracking this storm with multiple forecasters for days and we will respond as quickly as safely possible,” said Mike Burke, GMP’s vice president of field operations. “Stay far away from any downed trees or lines. Road conditions will also be tough.”

- Always assume downed lines and trees are energized – you cannot tell by looking at them
- Call GMP to report downed lines

Statewide Outlook for Approaching Storm: Winter Storm Warnings are now in effect across much of Vermont, starting at 10 PM on Sunday and continuing until 7 PM on Monday. The state will experience a transition from rain to snow later tonight, bringing a range of hazards to the North Country, including heavy, wet snowfall, gusty winds, and localized minor river flooding. Anticipate potential power and transportation issues associated with the transition to heavy, wet snowfall late tonight into Monday. The Monday morning commute is expected to be significantly impacted with snowfall rates reaching 1-2 inches per hour. Scattered to numerous power outages are possible. Motorists should be prepared for hazardous winter travel conditions on Monday, including slippery, snow-covered roadways and low visibility during the morning commute. Difficult driving conditions will persist throughout much of the day and into the evening commute. Exercise caution and reduce speed while driving. If travel is necessary, ensure you have an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
VTrans Preparedness: Our crews will be actively assessing the storm across the state this evening. VTrans will be on patrol, engaging in plowing, salting, and clearing operations in problematic areas as necessary. Please maintain a safe distance from maintenance vehicles and avoid crowding plows. Exercise caution while driving.
Traffic Advisory: VT-14 in Irasburg remains CLOSED approximately 1/2 mile south of US-5 at Bridge 129.
