Vermont Business Magazine The State Police Advisory Commission released the following statement Tuesday regarding Vermont State Trooper resignations announced March 31, 2023.
The State Police Advisory Commission provides advice and counsel to the Commissioner of Public Safety in carrying out his or her responsibilities for the management, supervision and control of the Vermont State Police. From time to time, it is important that the public understand the position of the State Police Advisory Commission on high profile events involving state police members.
The State Police Advisory Commission was recently consulted on a matter involving two troopers at the Westminster Barracks who used inappropriate and racist comments as they played an online game while off duty.
While Commissioner of Public Safety Jennifer Morrison had not reached a final decision on discipline before they resigned, the State Police Advisory Commission advised her that the troopers’ actions warranted termination and no lesser form of discipline was appropriate.
This conclusion of the State Police Advisory Commission was not included in the original press release from the Commissioner.
We understand there is a legal process that must be adhered to and although that process did not conclude before the resignations were accepted, the State Police Advisory Commission felt strongly that their recommendation be made known to the public.
