Vermont DOC to transition comprehensive health services providers following the completion of the Department’s current contract period
Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) today announced a three-year contract with Wellpath, LLC (Wellpath) to provide comprehensive health services to incarcerated individuals in Vermont. Wellpath, formerly Correct Care Solutions, is a multi-national healthcare provider that offers localized, high-quality, compassionate care to patients in challenging clinical environments. Vermont DOC formerly contracted with Correct Care Solutions from 2010-2015 to provide health services to Vermont’s incarcerated population.
Vermont DOC released a Request for Proposals (RFP) in May 2022 for a new comprehensive health services contract upon the completion of the current contract with VitalCore Health Strategies. The Department approached the selection with a thoughtful and meticulous process, engaging a framework grounded in evidence-based practices, the most current health research, and the Vermont community standard of care.
“We are thrilled to once again partner with the Vermont DOC to provide comprehensive medical and mental healthcare to the roughly 1,300 incarcerated individuals across the state,” said Ben Slocum, CEO of Wellpath. “Our mission is to provide quality care to every patient with compassion, collaboration, and innovation. Working together with this great partner we know our passionate and compassionate healthcare teams will meet the challenges of caring for justice served patients, implement patient care processes consistent with the community’s standard of care, and exceed our client’s expectations.”
The services under this contract will include medical, mental health, substance abuse, dental, vision, on-site and off-site specialty, pharmacy, care coordination, and emergency services. The contract begins on July 1, 2023.
“As one of the cornerstone human service providers in our state, it is imperative the Department offers a comprehensive health services program that delivers the Vermont community standard of care” said Vermont DOC Commissioner Nicholas J. Deml. “The COVID-19 pandemic, compounded with the increase in substance use disorder and mental health challenges, significantly shifted the health needs of our incarcerated population. We are grateful to partner with a healthcare provider who will deliver the highest standard of care in this new reality, placing a renewed focus on mental health, evidence-based practices, contemporary health research, and holistic care.”
