Vermont Law School’s new president analyzes Supreme Court term

Rodney Smolla Addresses ‘Summer of Discontent’ at Convocation

Vermont Business Magazine Rodney Smolla, president at Vermont Law and Graduate School, provided his expert analysis of the 2022 Supreme Court decisions upending American society in a convocation lecture on campus Thursday, September 1.

In “The Summer of Discontent: The Stunning 2022 Supreme Court Term,” Smolla, a renowned First Amendment lawyer, reflected on a number of high-profile rulings under the conservative-majority court that will no doubt impact the future of the country. Recent actions by the Supreme Court included overturning Roe v. Wade, curtailing the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation over the energy industry, gun control and the Second Amendment and more.

“Welcoming returning students and new arrivals on campus, it is important for us to discuss these rulings so that we may enter the school year with advocacy on our minds,” Smolla said. “Vermont Law and Graduate School students are those who will lead us in a short time — we want to encourage our community to be agents of positive change.”

Thursday’s convocation event — which allowed the VLGS campus to officially welcome Smolla as president, took place on the Debevoise Back Lawn, at the school’s South Royalton campus, and concluded with a reception featuring music from Smolla’s son in The Dylan Smolla Band.
