Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways throughout Vermont for the week of October 31, 2022. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates
I-89 Richmond – A culvert repair project is wrapping up. On Saturday, 10/29 at 8 p.m. until Sunday, 10/30 at 6 a.m., I-89 northbound will be CLOSED at Exit 10 in Waterbury. Traffic will follow a signed detour with all motorists exiting I-89 in Waterbury, traveling on U.S. 2 westbound, and re-entering I-89 in Richmond. This will allow for the removal of the remaining Jersey barriers and traffic control devises.
AOT anticipates that all lanes in this I-89 work zone will be open at 6 a.m. Sunday, 10/30. Any further work is not expected to have traffic impacts.
I-91 Bradford – A single-lane closure remains in place in the southbound lanes near Exit 16 for ongoing bridge maintenance. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph remains in effect. A shoulder closure will be implemented on Goshen Rd. under the bridge to facilitate bridge maintenance work on the I-91 overpass.
I-91 Fairlee – St. Johnsbury – Multiple work zones are in place for preventative maintenance repairs to bridges along the interstate. Single-lane closures have been established in both directions. Speed limit and lane-width reductions remain in effect.
I-91 Lyndon – Barton – Travelers can expect uneven lanes, grooved pavement, and daily lane closures in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Saturday during construction hours (6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.). Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project over VT 121 is underway. I-91 has been reduced to one lane of travel across the bridges in both directions. Southbound traffic will be diverted onto the northbound barrel this week. Northbound traffic will be limited to the right-hand travel lane. Motorists: be aware of a work zone speed reduction on I-91. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone.
An alternating one-way traffic pattern is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges.
Around the State
Alburgh – A deck replacement project continues on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero Island and Alburgh. Flagged traffic may be in effect intermittently. Minimal delays anticipated.
Andover – Bridge #9 over Trout Brook on Weston-Andover Rd. is closed through 11/04. A town-signed 6.4-mile detour route from Weston-Andover Rd. to Middletown Rd., then VT 11 to Hilltop Rd. and back to Weston-Andover Rd. is in place.
Barre Town – U.S. Route 302 will be closed from 6 p.m. on 11/04 to 6 a.m. on 11/05 for a culvert replacement. The closure will be in place from the intersection of Reservoir Rd. extending west to the roundabout in East Barre. During this closure there will be no possibility of through traffic.
Brattleboro – Newfane – A roadway project is underway along VT 30 from Cedar Street in Brattleboro to Newfane. A two-lane traffic shift is in place in Dummerston in the vicinity of ledge operations. An alternating one-way traffic pattern will be in effect throughout the project area in various locations. Delays may occur.
Burlington – A paving project is nearing completion along U.S. 2/Main Street from South Willard St. to I-89, Riverside Ave. and along North Willard St. to the intersection with Riverside Ave. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic during nighttime operations.
Burlington, Shelburne Street Roundabout – U.S. 7/Shelburne St. is restricted to one-way southbound between South Willard St. and Marian St.
South Willard St. is also restricted to one-way northbound between Shelburne St. and Chittenden Dr., and access to Locust St. from Shelburne St. southbound is open. Ledge Rd. will be restricted to right out only onto South Willard St. These traffic patterns will remain in place 24/7 until the roundabout is opened to traffic early next week.
Motorists are encouraged to follow the signed detour route to avoid delays. Through trucks are required to follow the signed detour route.
Charlotte – South Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. - 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Minimal delays anticipated.
Chelsea – Thetford – A resurfacing project continues on VT 113. There will be a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic as crews continue punch list work.
Chester – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on VT 103 just south of Smokeshire Rd. Speed and lane-width reductions are in effect throughout the project area. VT 103 Bridge #16 remains closed. Traffic is being maintained on a temporary bridge.
Essex – Two-way traffic will be maintained on VT 289 with lane shifts in place as crews work on final paving, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Minor delays anticipated.
Hardwick – A paving project continues on VT 14 and VT 15. Motorists should expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic along both routes between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Ludlow – The VT 103 (Main Street) Bridge No. 26 over Jewell Brook is open to two-way traffic, but sidewalks remain closed to pedestrians. Motorists can expect periodic alternating one-way traffic as crews install guardrails and pave the bridge deck.
Montpelier – Motorists may encounter occasional one-way flagged traffic at the rail crossing along U.S. 2 between Gallison Hill Rd. and the traffic circle as crews work on miscellaneous items related to the crossing improvements project.
Montpelier – Berlin – The contractor will finish installing asphaltic joints and line striping for the bridge replacement project along U.S. 2 at the Montpelier-Berlin town line. This work will result in alternating one-way traffic using flaggers.
Montgomery – A set of bridge deck replacements continues along VT 118. Motorists will encounter one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers during the day and temporary traffic signals during off-hours between West Hill Rd. and Bank St.
Newfane – The Depot Road arch bridge over Rock River remains closed while the bridge is replaced. Traffic is rerouted from the north via Grimes Hill Rd. and from the south via VT-30. Through traffic is not permitted. Grimes Hill Rd. and Dover Rd. (at the intersection with Depot Rd.) are reduced to one-lane operations with flaggers (daytime hours) and signals (overnight and when no work is ongoing). Motorists should expect grading of subbase material and paving at Dover Rd./ Grimes Hill Rd. within this one-lane operation.
North Hero – Grand Isle – Drawbridge construction continues along U.S. 2. A speed reduction remains in place. Mariners: The seasonal operating schedule for the drawbridge has ended. Now through November 15, 2022, the temporary drawbridge will be de-constructed. There will be a vertical height restriction during this time. Vessels that can pass under the bridge without an opening may do so if at least four-hour notice is given by calling the bridge tender, (802) 372-4360.
Poultney – A bridge replacement project is underway at the intersection of Thrall Rd. and River St. approximately 1.37 miles from the intersection of VT 30 and Thrall Rd. A yielding, single lane detour is currently in place at the entrance to River St. to accommodate construction equipment. Residents are advised to use caution when accessing properties on either side of the bridge.
Richford – A bridge replacement project continues along VT 105 approximately one mile south of the intersection of Main St. and River St. Motorists may encounter flaggers letting construction vehicles in and out of the work zone.
Richmond – Bolton – A rehabilitation project continues along U.S. 2. Motorists will encounter areas of one-way alternating traffic Monday through Friday during the daytime within the work areas.
South Hero – An intersection improvement project is underway at U.S. 2 and VT 314. Work will be completed off the roadway with minimal impacts to traffic.
Stowe – Travelers can expect alternating one-lane traffic along VT 100 near its intersection with West Hill Rd. to accommodate the construction of the road widening on each end of the project site. Crews will work from 6:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Mondays - Thursdays) and 6:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Fridays. Alternating one-lane traffic will generally occur between 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Motorists should reduce speed and travel with caution through the active construction zone.
Weathersfield – A district paving project is underway along VT 106 this week. Motorists should expect areas of one-way alternating traffic between the north end of Perkinsville to the intersection with VT 131 in Weathersfield with some delays.
Williston – Motorists can expect minimal lane closures on VT 2A between Hurricane Lane and Taft Corners as most work will occur off the roadway this week.
Wilmington – Brattleboro – A repaving project continues on VT 9. Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic along VT 9 as crews continue guardrail work, side road paving, and shoulder cleanup.
Winooski – A roadway project is nearing completion along East Allen St./VT 15. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic during nighttime operations. Minor to no delays expected.
Woodford – A ledge stabilization project is underway on VT 9. Minor traffic holds should be anticipated throughout the week. Eastbound traffic is reduced to one lane; a lane shift for westbound traffic will be in place through November. Motorists are urged to lower speeds when coming down the hill into the project area. A speed reduction to 40 mph is in place.
Woodstock – Hartland – A paving project continues along U.S. 4. Motorists can expect periodic alternating one-way traffic as crews work on punch list items and begin project cleanup.
