by Richard Donnelly is the Director of Energy Innovation at VGS (Vermont Gas Systems) Have you ever thought about how much energy it takes to create hot water for your home or business? The simple answer is “a lot.” Most water heating systems are powered by fossil fuels or electric elements. Up until recently, choosing between these two options meant a choice between carbon or cost. Fortunately, Vermonters have the chance to enjoy the best of both worlds by installing an electric heat pump water heater. That’s why VGS (Vermont Gas Systems) is enthusiastically embracing this technology, and is partnering to mark October 26, 2022 as the first-ever National Heat Pump Water Heater Day.
When Vermonters reach for the faucet to wash their hands, take a shower, or do laundry, the water flow requires a heating system to bring it to temperature. These units are tucked away in basements and utility closets. For most of us, the only time water heaters come to mind is when they don't function properly and need repair or replacement. While it is easy to overlook these common appliances, their importance and impact cannot be overstated. Vermont’s buildings contribute 34 percent of statewide greenhouse gas emissions, and water heating contributes a sizable share of the total.
Electric heat pump water heaters are an efficient, low-carbon option for Vermonters who need to upgrade their system. They can be installed in place of existing gas, oil, propane, or electric appliances. The technology is similar to cold climate heat pumps that warm and cool buildings. A fan spins to collect air, passing it over refrigerant in a process that produces hot water – just like a refrigerator in reverse. Many models have smart controls to optimize performance. In addition to meeting water heating demand, these units act as a dehumidifier, providing an important benefit to reduce excess moisture in your home or business.
Where feasible, we need to install heat pump water heaters to reduce emissions resulting from this essential appliance. The Vermont Climate Council and State energy planners have identified adoption of heat pump water heaters as a key pathway to meet the State’s mandated greenhouse gas reduction targets. During the 2022 legislative session, Governor Scott and Lawmakers created a $5 million “Switch and Save” Program to spur adoption of the technology. VGS is already assisting these efforts.
VGS has been providing efficiency services to our customers for 30 years. In 2021, we were the first gas-only utility in the country to offer a heat pump water heater option alongside legacy units. Hearing that a gas company is installing electric heat pump water heaters may turn heads. VGS is committed to doing our part to assist Vermont as we make progress toward our shared climate goals. That’s why we’ve put our expertise in rental, sales, installation, and service of water heating equipment to promote heat pump water heater adoption at the scale needed to reach the State’s benchmarks.
In celebration of the first-ever National Heat Pump Water Heater Day and VGS’s milestone 30th year as northwest Vermont’s thermal energy efficiency leader, Vermonters who want to upgrade their home water heater have a chance to win a brand new, highly efficient electric heat pump water heater installed at their residence through a free contest. VGS is hosting the giveaway contest through November 6, 2022. Vermonters who want to participate can learn more by calling (802) 863-4511 or by visiting https://vgsvt.com/sign-up-for-vgss-heat-pump-water-heater-contest/. Entries can be made using the contest form, or by sending a letter listing full name, address, phone, and email to: Vermont Gas Systems, Inc.
