Free smoke alarm installations for residents in need as part of national Red Cross Sound the Alarm effort

Smoke alarms save lives: Register at RedCross.org/EndHomeFiresNNE for a free smoke alarm installation on May 14

Vermont Business Magazine Williston residents in need can sign up for a free smoke alarm installation from American Red Cross Vermont Chapter and the Williston Fire Department on May 14.

“Our goal is to save lives,” said Kevin Mazuzan, Executive Director, Vermont Chapter. “So far this year, our volunteer Disaster Action Teams in Vermont have responded to more than 29 home fires and helped more than 81 displaced individuals. That’s why we want to make sure everyone has working smoke alarms, which can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.”

Residents of Williston, St. George and Hinesburg who need assistance are encouraged to visit RedCross.org/EndHomeFiresNNE to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation during the Red Cross Sound the Alarm event on Sat., 5/14. During the 20-minute home visits, Red Cross volunteers and members of the Williston Fire Department will also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.

“Most people don’t realize they only have two minutes to escape a home fire — and that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years,”Mazuzan said. “Taking action with this knowledge can be the difference between survival and tragedy.”

WILLISTON JOINS NATIONAL SOUND THE ALARM EFFORT This Sound the Alarm event is part of a national Red Cross initiative in May to install 50,000 free smoke alarms with partners in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country. Sound the Alarm events are a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save 1,243 lives since launching in October 2014. Since 2019, Red Cross volunteers in Vermont have installed 1,821 free smoke alarms and made more than 641 homes safer.

This work is made possible thanks to generous financial donations from regional partner, Vermont Co-operative Insurance.
