Vermont Business Magazine Revitalizing Waterbury (RW) has entered into a lease agreement with Black Cap Coffee & Bakery of Vermont for a new café and bakery at the Waterbury Train Station.

Black Cap Coffee & Bakery of Vermont is expanding its successful coffee shop business by adding Waterbury as its fourth location. It currently has shops in Stowe, Morrisville and on Church Street in Burlington. Black Cap is known for its delicious coffee and lattes, in-house baked fresh pastries, breakfast and lunch sandwich menus and friendly service, with a Vermont vibe.

Revitalizing Waterbury has owned the Waterbury Train Station since 2006. Green Mountain Coffee Café & Visitor’s Center had been the primary tenant the entire time, until it closed its doors at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

RW’s Board of Directors identified three priorities for a new tenant: a business that is financially viable, will be a good steward attending to the historical nature of the building and has a desire to be part of the local community.

“The addition of Black Cap Coffee & Bakery to Waterbury’s downtown and to the historic train station is a perfect fit for RW’s goals for the property” said Theresa Wood, President of Revitalizing Waterbury. “We are excited to welcome Laura Vilalta and her staff to bring this gem of a building back to life for the community.”

Black Cap will be converting the center section of the station into a full open bakery, providing baked goods also for their other locations in Stowe, Morrisville and Burlington.

In addition to baked goods and excellent coffee, Black Cap also offers to-go local beers and retail items. They plan on being open from 7 am to at least 5 pm seven days a week. Black Cap will also be improving accessibility of the building through construction of a ramp that will improve access to the front porch and entrances.

The Waterbury Train Station also serves as a stop for Amtrak. With the opening of the café and bakery, RW’s community room will reopen. The community room includes railroading exhibits curated from the Waterbury Historical Society as well as extensive information for visitors to the region.
