Vermont Business Magazine On Sunday, July 24th, more than 60 Vermont and New York children who have or have had cancer, will gather at Camp Ta-Kum-Ta in South Hero, Vermont for Camp’s signature Summer Program. Joined by more than 125 volunteers from all over the country, This will be the first time that Camp Ta-Kum-Ta has had a full residential program since February of 2020 and organizers say that everyone is excited.
“The jet packs are fueled, the rocket stands prepared to launch and Camp Ta-Kum-Ta is ready to head to Space for our 2022 Summer Program.” Said Patrick Gallivan, Camp Ta-Kum-Ta’s Camp Director of their space themed programming. “While our virtual offerings over the past two years did allow for connection, we have so missed being in person where we can together laugh, sing, dance, climb and swing from the ropes, design our best arts and crafts and share those simple moments. We are so ready to be back! If you happen to look at the night sky the last week of July and you see something you don’t recognize, fear not… it will be us, the Ta-Kum-Ta family, swinging from a Star.”
Under the guidance of Camp’s Wellness and Health Advisory Team, Camp Ta-Kum-Ta has held virtual programming due to the increased health risks that COVID presents to children with cancer. Since that time, Camp Ta-Kum-Ta has created a virtual program every month to maintain connection with their campers and their families. Now, Camp’s Wellness and Health Advisory Team says it is safe to return, with caution, to in-person programming.
"We are thrilled to be back in person!” Said Dennis DePaul, Camp Ta-Kum-Ta’s Executive Director. “Our families have trusted us throughout the pandemic and happily, our campers can’t wait to be back together. Because we serve immunocompromised children, COVID-19 protection protocols are still necessary. That said, we are doing our best to create the most magical experience possible while still following the protective measures. It may look a little different from past years, but the joy and love will undoubtedly shine through.”
Camp’s spaced themed programming will include space suit building, a dance party under the stars, star fleet academy scavenger hunts, and of course classic Camp activities like swimming, climbing on the ropes course, arts and crafts and connection with friends on Camp’s 103 acre property. Campers will have an experience that is out of this world!
Camp Ta-Kum-Ta provides year-round programs for children who have or have had cancer, and their families. They are entirely supported through donations from the community, and there is never a charge to the camper or their family.
