AOT Road Construction Report Week of July 18

Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways throughout Vermont. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.

Interstates

I-89 Brookfield – Montpelier – No work on the resurfacing project between Exits 5 and 8 this week, but motorists should plan on nightwork and ramp closures at Exits 6 and 7 from Sunday, 7/24 - Thursday, 7/28 the week following.

I-89 Richmond – A culvert repair project is underway. Motorists will encounter a one-mile-long lane closure in both travel directions just south of Exit 11 as southbound traffic is merged to the northbound lane using a crossover. Please pay attention to signage in the area and merge early.

I-89 Sharon – A bridge rehabilitation project continues. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction as crossovers are being utilized. Motorists - be aware of a work zone speed reduction.

I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the bridge.

I-91 Bradford – Northbound and southbound lane closures have been implemented near Exit 16 for preventative maintenance repairs to bridges. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph through the work zone is in place.

I-91 Fairlee – St. Johnsbury – Interstate travel will continue to be reduced to one lane in both directions for preventative maintenance repairs to multiple bridges. Speed limit and lane width restrictions are in effect.

I-91 Lyndon – Barton – A paving project continues. Plan on lane closures in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 - 25 during daytime construction hours, 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. Motorists should expect uneven lanes through the portion of the roadway that is partially milled.

I-91 Rockingham – A ledge stabilization project is underway. Motorists will encounter lane and speed reductions as southbound traffic is merged to the northbound barrel using a crossover.

I-91 Ryegate – St. Johnsbury – A northbound resurfacing project is underway. There will be a single lane closure between Exits 17 and 20, with minimal traffic delays as crews begin paving activities.

I-91 Weathersfield – A bridge deck replacement project continues at Exit 8. Lane and speed reductions are in effect as southbound traffic is merged to the northbound bridge using a crossover. Expect intermittent periods of flagged traffic along VT 131 under the bridge.

I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project over VT 121 is underway. I-91 Southbound has been reduced to one lane of travel over the bridge. I-91 Northbound will be reduced to one lane of travel over the bridge beginning 07/20. A speed reduction to 55 mph is in place within the project area. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone.

Around the State

Braintree – Preliminary construction activities for a bridge deck replacement project will continue next week with one-way alternating traffic patterns being implemented as needed on VT 12 approximately 5 miles north of the intersection with VT 66. The bridge is scheduled to be closed to all traffic for 28 days beginning the morning of 07/20. A signed detour will utilize VT 12A.

Brattleboro – Newfane – A series of culvert replacements continues along VT 30. Motorists may encounter alternating one-way traffic in the area.

Brownington – A slope stabilization and roadway reconstruction project is set to begin at multiple locations along Center Road in Brownington. Center Road will be closed to through traffic starting 07/20 through the fall. Traffic will be rerouted along VT 58, Hunt Hill Rd., and Schoolhouse Rd.

Burlington – A paving project is underway along U.S. 2/Main Street from South Willard St. to I-89, and along North Willard St. to the intersection with Riverside Ave. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. – 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic during nighttime operations.

Burlington, Shelburne Street Roundabout – Detour routes will remain in place 24/7 for motorists traveling along U.S. 7/Shelburne Street between Flynn Ave and Howard St. and South Willard St. between Howard St. and Shelburne St.

The U.S. 7/Shelburne Street detour will divert traffic along Howard St., Pine St., and Flynn Ave (southbound and northbound) to avoid delays on weekdays between 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Shelburne St. will remain open to local traffic.

Calais – Multiple bridge replacement projects are underway along VT 14 beginning approx. 7.6 miles north of its intersection with U.S. 2. Motorists should expect speed reductions and alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers during the day and a temporary signal at each bridge during non-work hours.

Chelsea – Thetford – A resurfacing project continues on VT 113. There will be single lane closures with alternating one-way traffic as crews mill bridges and side roads.

Chester – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on VT 103 just south of Smokeshire Rd. Speed and lane width reductions are in effect throughout the project area. VT 103 Bridge #16 is closed through October 2022. Traffic is being maintained on a temporary bridge.

Chester – Springfield – A roadway project is underway on VT 11 between VT 103 in Chester and VT 106 in Springfield. Expect one-way alternating traffic at multiple points along this route, with moderate delays in the vicinity of paving operations. Please add extra time to travel plans.

Essex – Colchester – A resurfacing project continues along VT 2A. Motorists will encounter one-way alternating traffic on Sunday – Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Fair Haven – Orwell – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic along VT 22A as crews continue paving the wearing course. Shoulder closures are also expected in Fair Haven as crews rehabilitate catch basin drains.

Hardwick – A paving project continues on VT 14 and VT 15. Motorists should expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic along both roadways between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Hartford – Work on the U.S. 4/VT 14 paving project is substantially complete. Crews will return late in the week to continue punch list items, including landscaping and cleanup activities.

Montpelier – Several railroad crossing projects are underway. Motorists should expect some flagged one-way alternating traffic at the rail crossing location along U.S. 2 between Gallison Hill Rd. and the traffic circle. Motorists will also encounter flagged traffic at the rail crossing on Pioneer St. off U.S., with full closures of the roadway scheduled for 07/21 and 07/22.

Montpelier – Berlin – A bridge deck replacement project continues along U.S. 2 over the Winooski River at the Montpelier-Berlin town line. Traffic is now directed over a temporary bridge. Motorists may encounter periods of one-way alternating traffic as crews continue removal of the existing structure.

Montgomery – A set of bridge deck replacements continues along VT 118. Motorists will encounter one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers during the day and temporary traffic signals during off-hours between West Hill Rd. and Bank St.

Newfane – The Depot Rd. Arch Bridge over Rock River is closed through Fall 2022. Traffic will be rerouted from the north via Grimes Hill Rd. and from the south via VT 30. Through traffic is not permitted. Grimes Hill Rd. and Dover Rd. (at the intersection with Depot Rd.) are reduced to one lane with signals for the duration of the closure.

North Hero – Grand Isle – Drawbridge construction continues along U.S. 2. A speed reduction remains in place. Mariners: The seasonal operating schedule for the drawbridge is in effect.

Pittsford – Brandon – Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic patterns on U.S. 7 in multiple locations as a paving project continues. Motorcycles are advised to use caution on milled surfaces. Plan on delays.

Plymouth – Bridgewater – A paving project continues along VT 100. Active work zones will be managed with one-lane alternating traffic controlled by flaggers as crews pave the wearing course and install bridge joints. Work will occur from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Richford – A bridge replacement project is underway along VT 105 approx. one mile south of the intersection of Main St. and River St. Motorists should see little impact to traffic.

A separate culvert replacement project is also underway on VT 105 approx. one mile south of Nickson Rd. Motorists should expect a traffic patten shift with signals directing alternating one-lane traffic through a temporary bypass. A speed reduction to 35 mph is in effect.

Richmond – Bolton – A resurfacing project continues along U.S. 2. Motorists will encounter areas of one-way alternating traffic as crews work on ledge removal, underdrain installation, and begin roadway excavation on the east end of the project.

Ripton – A streambank stabilization project continues on VT 125. Lane closures regulated by temporary traffic signals are in operation at two locations within the project area. Lane restrictions of 10-feet wide are in effect within the closure areas. Multiple additional signals are also now in place throughout the project. Please expect moderate delays.

South Hero – An intersection improvement project is underway at U.S. 2 and VT 314. Motorists should expect speed reductions in the area. Traffic will continue to be shifted to the east onto the on-site detour parallel to U.S. 2. Starting Monday, 07/18 through Wednesday, 07/20, the on-site detour will be reduced to one lane with alternating one-way traffic from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, 07/21, motorists should expect short roadway stoppages to facilitate the delivery of culvert sections.

Springfield – The Cheshire Toll Bridge along VT 11 over the Connecticut River will be reduced to one-way alternating traffic from Tuesday, 07/19 – Thursday, 07/21 between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. as needed for bridge inspection work.

Stockbridge – A slope stabilization project continues along VT 107 between its intersections with Stony Brook Rd. and Mt. Hunger Rd. Motorists can expect one-way alternating traffic in the project area.

Swanton – A paving project is underway along VT 78. Motorists may encounter flaggers and minor delays as crews conduct shoulder berm removal.

Walden – VT 15 will close just west of its intersection with VT 215 for 24 hours beginning at 5 a.m. on 07/20 for a bridge project along the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. A signed detour around the project site will be in effect during the closure.

Weathersfield – Motorists will encounter areas of one-way alternating traffic along VT 131 as crews work on various activities related to a paving project.

Weston – Ludlow – A paving project continues along VT 100 starting at its intersection with VT 155 progressing northeast toward Ludlow. Motorists will encounter one-way alternating traffic with some delays.

Williston Intersection Projects – Motorists will encounter lane shifts near the intersection of U.S. 2 and Industrial Ave. for an intersection improvement project. Industrial Ave will have two lanes of travel with traffic control present to allow for trucks entering/exiting the work area.

Travelers can also expect a lane closure in the northbound right lane on VT 2A from Hurricane Lane to Taft Corners between 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday through Friday for a separate intersection project. Please expect delays.

Williston Park and Ride – Construction of a new park and ride facility is underway along VT 2A near the I-89 Exit 12 interchange. Alternating traffic on VT 2A is possible throughout the week between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Wilmington – Brattleboro – A resurfacing project continues on VT 9. Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic in Marlboro and Wilmington as crews continue roadway excavation and fine grading, begin the second reclamation pass, and continue paving activities.

Winooski – A roadway project continues along East Allen St./VT 15. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic during nighttime operations, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m., Sunday - Thursday.

Woodford – A ledge stabilization project is underway on VT 9. Intermittent traffic holds throughout the week, including a 15-minute hold late in the week between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for blasting operations. Longer delays may occur. Eastbound traffic is reduced to one lane; a lane shift for westbound traffic will be in place through November. Motorists: please lower speeds when coming down the hill into the project area. A speed reduction to 35 mph is in place.
