Vermont Business Magazine Montpelier, VT Governor Phil Scott Monday issued the following statement regarding the death of Representative Warren Kitzmiller. He was 79 and suffered a stroke on Saturday, according to the Times-Argus. He had decided not to seek re-election to the House after 22 years.
“I am saddened to learn Rep. Kitzmiller has passed away. I had the pleasure of working with Warren when I served in the Senate, also representing Washington County.
“Warren was always kind, respectful and a good representative for his community – both in and outside of the legislature. Whether through his legislative work or at Onion River Sports, which he founded and owned for decades, he made a difference for central Vermont and leaves a distinguished legacy.
“I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleague in the legislature.”
Vermont Democratic Party Chair Anne Lezak released the following statement following the news of the passing of Democratic State Representative Warren Kitzmiller:
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Representative Warren Kitzmiller. He was a kind, honest, hard-working legislator for over 20 years. Rep. Kitzmiller made Montpelier and the Legislature better by his presence, and will be dearly missed. We offer our thoughts and sincere condolences to his family at this difficult time."
House Speaker Jill Krowinski issued the following statement Sunday on the passing of Representative Kitzmiller:
“I am heartbroken to hear about the passing of Representative Warren Kitzmiller. Representative Kitzmiller was first appointed to represent Montpelier in the House in 2001, following the death of his wife, the late state Representative Karen Kitzmiller. This year, Warren decided to retire and not run for re-election after 22 years of service. His proudest moment was his vote on marriage equality. Many of us will remember Warren not only for that vote but his love for and dedication to his Montpelier community. I will always remember him talking passionately about the annual cold weather coat drive. My thoughts are with his family and the Montpelier community. He will be deeply missed. Warren is survived by his wife, Jeanne Cariati, and daughters Amy and Carrie.”
Lt. Governor Molly Gray released the following statement on the passing of Representative Warren Kitzmiller:
“I am saddened to hear Representative Kitzmiller has passed away. Warren was a friend and mentor to me as Lt. Governor. He was a trusted public servant, a legend in the outdoor recreation community, and shared an extraordinary commitment to public service with his late wife Karen. He will be deeply missed.
"I send my sincerest condolences to his to family, friends, and the Montpelier community.”
