Vermont Business Magazine The US Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated 178 thousand acres of corn planted for all purposes in New England for 2021, up 6% from last year’s acreage of 168 thousand acres.
Vermont
- Corn planted for all purposes in 2022 is estimated at 90 thousand acres, up 6% from 2021.
- Growers expect to harvest 165 thousand acres of hay, up 3% from 2021 acreage of 160 thousand acres.
- Other hay is estimated at 150 thousand acres, up 3% from 2021.
- Alfalfa hay is estimated at 15 thousand acres, unchanged from 2021.
Connecticut
- Corn planted for all purposes in 2022 is estimated at 25 thousand acres, up 4% from 24 thousand acres in 2021.
- Growers expect to harvest 52 thousand acres of hay, in 2022, up 13% from the 2021 acreage of 46 thousand. Other hay is estimated at 45 thousand acres, up 13% from last year.
- Alfalfa hay is estimated at 7 thousand acres, up 17% from last year.
Maine
- Corn planted for all purposes in 2022 is estimated at 33 thousand acres, up 10% from last year’s acreage of 30 thousand acres.
- Oat planted area for 2022 is estimated at 27 thousand acres, up 23% from 2021. Estimated harvested acres is 23 thousand acres, up 21% from 2021 acreage.
- Growers expect to harvest 128 thousand acres of hay in 2022, up 7% from 2021 acreage of 120 thousand. Other hay is estimated at 120 thousand acres, up 9% from the 2021 acreage. Alfalfa hay is estimated at 8 thousand acres, down 20% from the previous year.
- Area planted to potatoes in 2021 is estimated at 60 thousand acres in 2022, up 11% from 2021. Harvested area is estimated at 59.5 thousand acres in 2022, up 11% from 2021 acreage.
Massachusetts
- Corn planted for all purposes in 2022 is estimated at 15 thousand acres, up 7% from 2021.
- Growers expect to harvest 55 thousand acres of hay, unchanged from last year.
- Other hay is estimated at 50 thousand acres, unchanged from the previous year.
- Alfalfa hay is estimated at 5 thousand acres, unchanged the previous year.
New Hampshire
- Corn planted for all purposes in 2022 is estimated at 13 thousand acres, no change from 2021.
- Growers expect to harvest 50 thousand acres of hay in 2022, up 19% from 2021 acreage of 42 thousand acres.
- Other hay is estimated at 45 thousand acres, up 22% from 2021. Alfalfa hay is estimated at 5 thousand acres, the same as last year.
Rhode Island
- Corn planted for all purposes in 2022 is estimated at a record low 2 thousand acres, unchanged from the previous year.
- Growers expect to harvest 7 thousand acres of hay, unchanged from last year.
- Other hay is estimated at 6 thousand acres, the same as last year.
- Alfalfa hay is estimated at 1 thousand acres, the same as last year.
