CVMC earns 5-star quality rating from CMS

2022 is the third consecutive year the hospital has been awarded the highest ranking focusing on over 40 quality measures

Vermont Business Magazine Central Vermont Medical Center (UVM Health Network-CVMC) has again earned a 5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which announced its annual hospital ratings for 2022 in late July.

The ratings, found on Medicare’s Care Compare website, rate hospitals based on more than 40 quality measures over five categories: safety of care, readmissions after treatment of common conditions, patient experience, mortality, and timely and effective care. CMS reviewed data from the 2021 calendar year for the ranking determination.

Quality measures demonstrated that at CVMC:

  • Cost the same or below national averages for benchmark procedures
  • Has a lower Medicare spending per beneficiary than state and national averages
  • Typically has lower rates of hospital-related complications than national benchmarks.

CVMC is one of only 429 hospitals nationwide to earn the top rating from CMS — just 13.8 percent of the 3,093 hospitals across the country rated by the federal agency. CVMC has achieved the 5-star rating for three consecutive years. Four hospitals in Vermont received 5 stars in 2022 – The University of Vermont Medical Center, the anchor academic hospital for the UVM Health Network – was also among those receiving the highest ranking.

“Every member of our team is committed to improving the health and safety of those we serve,” said Nejat Zeyneloglu, MD, Chief Medical Officer at CVMC. This recognition is a testament to their hard work, professionalism and ongoing dedication to providing the highest quality care to our Central Vermont communities.”

The five star ranking comes as CVMC was recently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as high performing for three types of care.
